    Rafa - Scum fear us

Let’s show United they’re right to fear us - Rafa Benitez
Aug 24 2007 by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

RAFA BENITEZ says Manchester United’s refusal to sell Gabriel Heinze to their bitterest rivals is the biggest signal yet Liverpool are now regarded as genuine title challengers.

And now the manager wants his players to take the club’s frustrations onto the park, channelling their energy in a positive way to prove United’s fears of an Anfield revival correct.

United used the argument during the Premier League hearing that they wouldn’t sell their players to clubs they regarded threats to their domestic supremacy.

Amid the disappointment of losing the case, Benitez accepts this was still a back-handed compliment.

“They have shown us they think we are stronger now because they didn’t want us to sign a very good player,” said Benitez.

“Now we have to show them they’re right and do everything we can to be even stronger in the future.

“This week has been a difficult week for us. We’ve had problems on and off the pitch and we know the reasons why. But now we know we can’t change things so have to be positive moving forward and think about football, particularly in our preparations for Sunderland, and then in all our other games.

“When you have a week like we’ve had, sometimes you need to aim to double your standards, and if you get halfway there you’ve still made a big improvement.”

Benitez is backing his midfielders to cope with the likely absence of skipper Steven Gerrard in the North East.

Momo Sissoko and Javier Mascherano will compete for central roles, with the Argentinian favourite to get the nod.

Benitez said: “Steve is a key player for us, but we have a lot of others to choose from. We have a lot of really good midfielders here. I need to check their condition before I decide what to do, but we know they are capable of doing a good job for us.”

Rafa Benitez: All we want is a fair deal

Rafa Benitez: All we want is a fair deal

LAST week’s visit of Chelsea was regarded as the first true test of Liverpool’s title pretensions.

For Rafa Benitez, tomorrow’s trip to Sunderland is a greater barometer of what’s achievable in the league this season.

Motivating and preparing his team for a high profile clash isn’t a problem.

Gritty away days in the North East, where the pressure is on Liverpool more than the hosts and when the manager feels circumstances are conspiring against his players, are a different matter.

To say Benitez has enjoyed happier times in English football ranks alongside ‘Rob Styles struggles in big games’ or ‘Richard Scudamore doesn’t like upsetting Sir Alex Ferguson’ as possible understatements of the season.

His Wednesday rant against the Premier League was considerably toned down by the time he met the national press yesterday, but his anger was still apparent.

The problem he faces outside Merseyside is convincing an unfavourable audience he’s not getting too many excuses prepared early in the event of a Liverpool dip.

Benitez is aware of this, but argues it’s convenient for his dissenters to ignore the facts which prove his case.

“It’s not been the best week for us,” reflected Benitez.

    “I’ve seen a lot of things I don’t like.

“You know I always try to be positive and I know people will be saying we’re just making excuses. But if you look at our situation it’s clear.

“Last season we played over double what our nearest rivals played in early kick-offs. This year we have four already.

“People just need to check how many games United, Arsenal and Chelsea must play at these times compared to us.

“I don’t want to be seen as looking for excuses, but as someone who just wants equal treatment.

“If you compare our early kick-offs, especially after international breaks, it’s really surprising.

“People can analyse this for themselves and see it’s clear.

“I don’t want Liverpool to get special treatment from the Premier League, I just want all of the clubs to be treated in the same way.”

The curse of the international break is hardly a new phenomenon.

You can set your calendar by Benitez repeating his concerns.

As each season passes and his argument is ignored, it would appear he’s deciding to raise his voice.

It should come as no surprise that the manager who is obsessed with the ‘small details’, meticulous in his own planning, has no time, sympathy or tolerance for those who decide his fixture schedule without considering the repercussions, or clarifying how they reach their decisions about who plays where and when.

“My concern is these types of games, such as away at Sunderland, are already difficult, and when they’re an early kick-off after an international break and we’ve had no time to prepare, it’s even more difficult,” said Benitez today.

“You know during the course of a season you can’t lose more than four or five games to win the title.

“I see games like this as a bigger risk than they need to be because we’ve had only five players to work with this week. The players never return until late on Thursday and then today we must travel to Sunderland for an early kick-off.

“These are difficulties which I’ve spoken about a lot before, so when it keeps being repeated, people can see why I’m not happy.”

One might imagine Benitez’s mood would be helped by the consolation tomorrow’s fixture will be a Styles free zone.

In fact, Styles provoked a more sympathetic stance from the manager, who has accepted the apology which followed last week’s penalty blunder.

His target was the source of the problem, which he clearly attributes to the bully boy tactics of certain opponents.

“Keith Hackett apologised to me. I can accept a mistake like this, although it can’t bring back the two points,” he said.

“In this case you’re talking about one individual. I have no problem if the same referee is in charge of our games in future.

“What I can’t accept or understand is why some teams are allowed to put so much pressure on the referee all the time, but nothing ever happens.

“If you analyse the game last week, you can see the referee was under pressure.

“We’ve had meetings about the behaviour of players on the pitch.

“These things happen and the same teams profit from it.

“I’ve told my players to respect the referee, but you know in football sometimes things happen.

“But when a team does this every week? That’s something for people to look at.”

The Premier League’s headmasterly response to Benitez’s comments was they were ‘disappointed’ – especially as the Liverpool manager had used the media to voice his concerns.

On reflection, they may recognise if they’d addressed his concerns sooner, the he may not have felt the need to be so public in his criticism.

They certainly are getting worried about us, now that we have the money we can now compete in the transfer market. Like all the years before they have out sepnt us and bought the best players

I think our manager is extremely underrated in the mind games department and he ****s all over Mourinho and Ferguson when he wants to.

Does anyone actually have the figures for the early kick offs? What with Fergie disputing this it would be good to know. I can't remember the Mancs having many early kick offs last season but then I don't want to watch them.

I definitely remember that even Sky had to accept last season that we always had away games after CL games when United/Chelsea rarely did when Rafa raised it.

He is certainly up there with the best on the one to one area but until recently he has failed to use the media to work the FA/PL very well.

I know that we had 15 lunchtime kick-offs last season. Don't know how many MU had but it was nowhere near that many

Ok... so when we didn't get a result...let's see:

                            Everton, home and away. ok.
We shouldn't really lack motiation to those games should we?

Sheff U Away... **** team we should beat anyway.

                            Lost to Bolton away, ok.
Draw at Villa..well, that is not too bad is it?

The others were against the Chavs or Mancs....so LFC suffered more than them due to the early kick offs? Sorry, I don't get it.

I don't really buy Rafa's rant on this point. He does have some points in his other rants though.
