Rafa has made some great signings during his time in charge, but like all managers he has brought in his share of players that just weren't up to the job of playing for Liverpool. The thing I've been impressed with is that he has been able to bring in players that seem to have some sort of sell-on value. He seems to make his mind up pretty quickly whether or not they are going to fit, and if they don't he has no trouble finding other clubs for them and moving them on. Look at how seemingly painless it was to say goodbye to the likes of Kronkamp, Morientes, Pellegrino, Josemi and Nunez.

houlliers downfall was not being able to admit his transfer mistakes
to succeed youve got to write off the big cash failures like fergie did with verondrunk knows best

Only Morientes was big failure out of those. Josemi was brought in cheaply to cover an area Rafa had identified as weak (after all Finnan had a poor first season upon which Rafa had made squad analysis). Kromkamp was brought in to get rid of Josemi. And if the reported fee to PSV is correct there has been no loss.
Nunez was forced upon us when Owen went. We couldn't get Juan Fran so he was tagged on to fill another (then) weak squad position. Pellegrino came in serve another purpose of centre back cover. He was on a free and although he wasn't great he enabled Sami to have a rest.

Yeah, having said that, I now think there are more passengers in the United team than there is in ours. Ruthless RafaOriginally posted by enema of the state

Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'
"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.
* After Tommy Lawrence had let in a fluke goal between his legs

I think Rafa, knows exactly what is needed, and is able to identify at an early stage if certain players fit the mould. He is also not afraid to get shot of any player who seems to have a disruptive influence or who is unsettled.
In addition he does not make a fuss if any player does not want to be there, and it appears as though every player we have wants to succeed and play for LFC. He is also not afraid to tell players that they may not play regularly (such as Didi and Djimi), and that he has no problems in them finding new clubs, or if they would like to stay....he is a very honest manager.
The one thing that has impressed me big time is that he has shipped out almost all the dead wood and players who really are not good enough. The only one left on the books currently is Diao (he did not complete his move to Spain as far as I know). We may have not gotten the prices we wanted, but at least they do not figure in the plans, and we are not wasting wages on them any longer.

And Dudek - although not a rubbish player by any means, but Rafa doesn't rate him.Originally posted by fowlenThe one thing that has impressed me big time is that he has shipped out almost all the dead wood and players who really are not good enough. I'm actually amazed that no-one has come in for him.Oh I don't know.

It'll probably be Dudek's wages that has stopped him from leaving. I think it's right that we want a fee for him, as he's a damn good keeper - but there aren't many teams that can afford his £40k+ a week wages. (In fact, he's probably on nearer £50k a week!!!)James Philip Milner Fanclub #1

I don't want this to turn into a Ged hating session as I know Dunk has strong opinions about him and hates when we slag Ged off.
Ged did an awful lot for the club and I respect what we acchieved under him but, wait a second I forgot where I was!!
Who giving a monkey's bollox what Dunk thinks!
Ged,although he did bring alot of pride back to LFC,he made a complete cats wank out of our wages structure during his time at the club.
What was he thinking signing players like Diao,Cheyrou and even Dudek on £50k or even £40k a week!
Who sanctioned this, surely Parry must take some of the blame.
I know you have to back the manager but for ****s sake did no-one stop to think!
Rant over.

I think the key thing with rafa is he keeps a distance between himself and all of the players, Gerrad has commented on it and I reckon it's how a manager should be, after all he must be ruthless in order to achieve what is best for the club. Some time I wonder about this when looking at morientes last season - I reckoned cisse should have been given more of a chance, couldn't understand morientes getting picked all the time, also garcia - I sometimes wonder why he is in th team ahead of others, but looking at how he has got rid of players, when ready it can only be because of tactics.
Also all players bar pellegringo left with a medal, whether fa cup or euro, so should boost their confidence/cred and market value (no too sure bout the last one tho)
