Rotation - nice line from Bascombe

In his match report today, he included the line - "Once everyone gets their head around the basic maths that being involved in 40 games out of 60 games in a Liverpool team chasing four trophies is preferable to playing in 40 out of 40 for a club fighting on no fronts..."

    Absolutely

Even Sam Allardyce said something similar in support of Rafa's policy at the weekend. It was along the lines of "I've only got 40 games to worry about so there's no need to rotate. Rafa has 60 to worry about".

All succesful clubs have to rotate to some extent to keep the squad happy and to rest the top players ahead of big games. The trick is to have quality players to rotate in when needed and so far it looks like we've got that this season.

Now we just need someone to do a statistical analysis of how our defending at corners and free-kicks compares with other top sides, and hopefully we can stop the obsession with rotation and zonal defending that ITV diplayed in their commentary last night.

Listening to Johnny Giles & Ray Houghton on RTE last night, their "pet" conversation topic is rotation as opposed to zonal marking.

They were saying there should be 8,9 players assured of playing each week so changes are minimal, went on to give an example of Kuyt & Crouch scoring 3 between them last night and saying if they were in any other team that would see them assured of starting on Saturday but not at Liverpool

My point was on Saturday Torres was outstanding and ripped Sunderland several new arseholes from the first minute to the last and Vorinin played very well & scored, however neither played any part in the next game. If you looked at it positively, we rested 2 form strikers and the incoming "replacements" came in with something to prove and subsequesntly scored 3 between them

I think you will have certain people who have a very traditional way of looking at the way football was and will never understand / accept the notion of squad rotation / resting players / zonal marking etc & will never change their minds, no matter what factual evidence is available to back it up

good post. i love gilesy - i think houghton is a **** - but i think he gets it more right about individual players than any systems at this stage. he has trashed zonal marking previously as a fad from the 70s and i think he just can't get his head around rafa's reasons for rotation.

Rafa rarely 'tinkers' with his keeper and defence, when they're all fit, and Stevie G and Xabi usually figure for the big games so that's seven of the side with just the wide midfielders and strikers being 'rotated' regularly.

The fact that we always finish the season strongly suggests that Rafa's idea of resting players does actually work and keeps them all fresh. It also means that we don't struggle as much when we have injuries as the last two matches have proved, scoring six without reply with our so-called 'talisman' out with a broken toe.

no one mentions dementos rotation or maureens?

and we have the best defense in the league over the last few seasons

would that not mean that something is working?

it gets boring after a while doesnt it

the game is changing and will continue to change

Rotation will become less of an issue now that we have capable players of replacing the "first team" players for some games.

There was too big a gap in quality between first and second team players last season. We now have at least 20 players capable of playing for the First team. Only Reina IMO is sure to start every game when fit.

Houghton's an idiot. He is negative about everything.

Classic line came out with last night after a 4-0 trouncing:

"Yes but does he know strongest first eleven?"

Ray, get over - this isn't the 80's. There is no such thing as "a strongest first eleven". It's called horses for courses you moron and it takes intelligence.

Only Jim Beglin is more negative. I often think he if he was around in Pele's time and the great man beat everyone twice before scoring from forty yards Beglin would still come out with:

"Yeah it was a good finish but you have to question the defending."

Shortly after Rafa arrived and started using 'Zonal' marking, Houghton defended it, stating that Liverpool defended the same way under KK. Apart from that like, he's a ****

Apart from his split personalities (how the **** can anyone be born in Glasgow, play for the Republic of Ireland and talk with a cockney accent?) the other thing I hate about Houghton is how he ****ing mispronounces his surname. It should be pronounced 'Horton' not friggin' 'Howton'...
