I certainly remember seeing tables with Man U way ahead of us, probably over 5 years. They spent more than us (gross or net) this summer, so they should still be miles ahead.

I dont doubt we've been outspent by both Man Utd and Chelsea over the lat 5 years. Like you suggest, these kind of things are always misleading and can easily be manipulated to support whatever point you are trying to make.

As far as I'm concerned, the only thing these things have conclusively shown is that Wenger is a genius when it comes to producing competitive teams on a very low net spend, and that he is the best pound-for-pound manager the Premier League has ever seen.

I'm not sure anyone outside the clubs have any idea what exactly was spent this summer or what installments and conditions were involved in the deals. I think we probably did comparable amounts of business this year.

It is obvious that in the past Man United have spent a lot more than us. Not sure what it would tell you even if you had full figures to be honest.

The fact is that in the last three years Rafa has completely reshaped a squad and now has one of quality. A few years ago Fergie set about the same task and he too now has a top class squad. In order to do it you have to have the cash available to make deal for top players, which we didn't have until this summer and United have had for a number of years.
