Two out and out wingers. We only have Kewell and Leto who can play as an out and out winger.

      One new central defender.

One right wing back so Rafa will have that option if he needs it.

      One attacking playmaker.

One striker that is excellent in the air.

We have the best squad but even the best squad has holes in it. It's impossible to get a complete squad because the squad would be to big so you must sign the players that fits your system best.

If we sign the above players then we would have to sell some of the players we have now and we would then miss what they bring to the squad.

We already have a massive squad, probably even to big so we can't sign any top quality player without selling a player first.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

We need to replace Hyypia. Other than that I guess LB, RB, LW and RW are positions we might need more quality. We'll know more after this season how Benayoun etc have done. We really dont have a quality LW. Babel will probably end up as a striker and Kewell will leave next summer.

We don't need a new left back IMO. Insua will be ready next season.

we're a defender short so I'd like a new central defender.

              Or a new central midfielder

Are you talking about Barragan? From what I've seen from him I'd love to get him back here, he looks good.

Attacking playmaker eh, I didn't know you got defensive ones seriously though I'd love to have a genuine number 10 in our squad. I just don't think we have the place in the squad to accommodate one. Especially it'd require 4-2-3-1 and we have 4 strikers, 4 doesn't go into 2 well let alone 1. But taking a risk on a van der Vaart or something would please me. Can't see it happening though.

I think Rafa will give Insua and Hammill their chance next season so that will solve two of our problems.

yeah, I've been too busy with university work so I've only seen about 3 liga games this season. So I'm not sure how he's been going.

But at the start of last season he was very good. He started the first 10 games or so bar the ones against Madrid, Barca and Valencia. (He was moved to the bench and Arbeloa from centre back to the right) He scored a cracking goal too. He lost his place and struggled to win it back later in the season though. They wanted a more solid team so Coloccini played out on the right. In the U20 wc he was impressive again. Seeing we can grab him for around 350k(475 according to wiki) I would hope we take him back. If it doesn't work out I'm sure we could get atleast 2-4m for him. It's a win win situation imo. Looks very promising and seeing Finnan will aging even further at the end of the season. Dunno if he will come back but I would really like him to.

There is always scope to improve. If you look at each player in turn, there are plenty of examples where better replacements could be found, at a price.
I'd say Masher and Gerrard are amongst the very best in the world at what they do. If we had to replace either of them I don't think we could find players that are better. I don't think many would argue with that. In my opinion Pepe, Torres and Agger have the potential to be included in that category. They have the talent and seem to have the mentality, they just need more experience. Although Carra is a far better defender than he will ever be given credit for it is his character that would be virtually impossible to replace. These players I wouldn't swap. I wouldn't want to lose Alonso or Finnan either, and Babel seems to have huge potential. Everywhere else, either better or potentially better (i.e. established but unproven in the PL) players exist. However, I agree with Red Polo that we don't have any real problem positions.
