Graham Poll: Fifa singled out Crouch

What a disgrace this is, I never thought I would have heard another ref. say something like this. Whoever gave these instructions should be sacked.
Former referee Graham Poll has revealed that Fifa instructed its referees to punish Peter Crouch for fouling.

Poll claimed that before the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, Fifa refereeing chiefs singled out the 6ft 7in England striker and told officials to crack down on him.

Crouch will miss Saturday's vital Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel through suspension after picking up two cautions in just five international matches this season.

In contrast, the forward received only two yellow cards in 29 appearances for Liverpool last term and Poll may have finally provided an explanation why.

    Marked man

"At the World Cup last year, we were shown videos of England games," Poll said in The ***.

"The head of refereeing at Fifa said, 'Look at this big fella Crouch. He's a real pain and getting away with too much. We need to mark him as a player we need to look out for'.

"We watched England's warm-up games and it was pointed out the way he used his arms. I tried to defend him, being English."

Crouch was subsequently booked against Paraguay and consistently cited for fouling during the tournament.

    Warning

Former Premier League official Poll also admitted that the guidelines given to referees by their bosses can influence their decisions as he issued a warning to players.

Speaking on Radio Five Live Poll added: "You have to ask yourself as a ref if you are looking out for him all the time or only when he has done something that draws your attention.

"To prepare is fine but to prejudge is not. And, lo and behold, Crouch did get booked in Germany.

"He has been picking up cautions since and is out of Saturday's match.

"Players need to be aware that referees individually, or as a referee's team, can be tactical as well."

Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.

Parts of the interview that werent included in the original link:

“I would rate Liverpool, like AC Milan, as our major rivals for the Champions League this season. They are clubs which never tire of winning big trophies again and again.

But my personal preference, if I could choose the best of all our European rivals and transplant them to Madrid, would be to take the Manchester United attack and graft it on to the Chelsea defence. That would be the perfect combination.”

So he wants his team to score 3 goals and concede 6 goals in 5 matches then?

Looking at the way Madrid played against Seville in the Spanish Super Cup home leg then yes...

I can only assume that he hasn't seen us this year and is talking about Crouch, Kuyt and Benayoun.

If the only football he saw involving LFC last season was against Barcalona then he's spot on.

We were somewhere around Barstow on the edge of the desert when the drugs began to take hold.

Eh? The beauty of the first Barca game is that we completely suprised them and everyone by coming out attacking when everyone expected us to defend.
If we are all only happy when we are really winning in the end, when your race finishes, what life would that be?

All in the eyes of the beholder I guees.

I think we beat them with power, grit and determination. We beat them because they were in a slump and they stopped playing after we equalized.

To say that we beat them with stylize football would be OTT.

I like the intensity in out play to be honest.

Fair enough, it was hardly a Brazilian like performance, but everyone (including us supporters) expected Rafa to put ten men behind the ball and hold on for at best a draw before we got home to Anfield.

We didn't though, Rafa seized the opportunity and attacked, the rest is history as we say...

With beautiful technical football or hard work? Has nothing to do with whether we played them off the pitch or not. Pay attention please. :bird:
