Won't happen I don't think. Too much money involved in the current champions league and sponsors and tv companies want the big clubs with the big players.

I thought the English FA have already backed the idea of the cup winners being in the Champions League

Yeah, Barwick has said he likes the idea. The pan is expected to get through if/when it gets to the vote.

I read somewhere that they are wanting to extend to 20 clubs and it was likely that the chavs would get in.

The G14 have threatened Platini that his changes to the format of the Champions League could mean that they could form their own Super Europe League.

Would we want to be in a Super Euro League?

Barwick backed it but I suspect only as the FA gets a higher %age of FA cup revenue than they do from the league. Rafa sort of half supported it on the basis that it made **** all difference in this country as one of the top four always wins it. In other countries I doubt there will be as much support.

That is clearly the thin end of the wedge as far as Platini is concerned and while it is a relatively acceptable move here none of the other changes (such as his original plan of reducing the number of places available to England, Spain and Italy to three) have met with any sort of good reception.

By doing it we would be kicked out of Champions league, premier league, fa cup and league cup. Based upon this year the winner of the league will get about £50m in tv revenue and the winner of the camions league about £30m so the winner would need to get about £80m of tv revenue which would not be that easy, also as we would be playing 19 home games totally instead of about 26-30 then there would need to be a massive increae in ticket prices or more money from tv, meaning potentially needing the winner to get £100m tv revenue. There would be no/very few away fans at each game.
This would not be the straight winner you think.

Platini is another clown. This is another thinly disguised attempt to get more smaller clubs into the CL. Why is he still beating this drum? Doesn't he realise it'll be a poorer competition with less of the big-boys in it? There's a lot of dead rubber games in the CL as it is (especially in the group stages), bringing in weaker teams will just make that problem worse.

He thinks he is doing right by the competition. The best thing he could do is bring back the cup winners cup.

I think in principle there is nothing wrong with the idea of letting in more teams who are true champions of their countries, although in practice it will undoubtedly reduce the quality of the Champions League.

When I first heard the idea I thought that it had no chance of getting through as the more powerful national FAs and the G14 would oppose it. But according to a sports lawyer on Radio 5 last week, it may take a few years to happen but he was in no doubt that it will happen eventually.
