    Liverpool Stars To Be Sold!

Sep 6 2007 by David Jones, Liverpool Echo

But it’s only for one night . . . and for a good cause

LIVERPOOL today sensationally put Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Fernando Torres and Pepe Reina up for sale.

And in an equally dramatic move Rafa Benitez will also be sold off to the highest bidder.

But before Anfield die-hards hit the panic button, the move is all in a good cause.

Liverpool’s top names agreed to participate in a charity night aimed at raising £2m for the Lily Centre.

Star players will be auctioned as companies bid to win Gerrard and his superstar team mates as their table hosts.

A charity ball and Liverpool Player of the Year awards will then be held at St George’s hall this December, with the evening billed as a celebration of The Heartbeat of Liverpool.

Despite her husband leaving Number 10, Cherie Blair has continued in her role as patron as the Lily Centre.

The centre is also being supported by Rafa Benitez’s wife Montse.

Rafa and Montse are now committed to helping raise funds for the Vauxhall-based charity which helps women recovering from breast cancer.

Investment is badly needed by Lily Centre co-founders Peggy O’Brien and Winnie Keating who have formed a close bond with the Benitez family.

Secretary Ms Keating said: “We’re delighted this event is being held and every penny will go towards improving the welfare of breast cancer sufferers in the group.

Event organisers hope businessman and women will dip into their pockets to help reach the £2m target.

One bidder has already pledged an opening £10,000 bid for the Liverpool manager to be his company’s table host.

Several exclusive items will also be up for auction with the possibility of a flight on George Gillett’s private jet to watch the Montreal Canadians, and a pair of cufflinks designed by skipper Gerrard.

Further details will be posted on www.newzbrasserie.com over the next few days.

I am delighted to see Montse getting involved with the community like this, will only bring them closer to the City of Liverpool.
Bill shankly to Tommy Smith after he'd turned up for training with a bandaged knee:
'Take that poof bandage off, and what do you mean YOUR knee, it's LIVERPOOL'S knee !'

"Sorry, boss, I should have kept my legs together," said Lawrence. "No, Tommy, your mother should have kept her legs together!," replied Shankly.
