    Crouch plays waiting game

Peter Crouch has put a question-mark over his long-term future at Liverpool by stalling on a new contract.

Crouch, who will be available for England against Russia on Wednesday after being suspended for last night's qualifier with Israel, has been offered a new three-year deal by Rafa Benitez.

But he will wait until January before committing himself after being frustrated at his lack of first-team opportunities this season. The 6ft 7in striker has been relegated to fourth-choice striker and been left out of the first-team squad in three of their four Premier League matches.

If Liverpool managed to win their first title since 1990 but his shortage of games continued, he could miss out on a championship medal. He also fears that his place in the England set-up would be in jeopardy if he continues to be frozen out of the majority of big games for his club.

Benitez has a good relationship with the striker he signed for £7 million in 2005 and still sees him as a valuable stand-in. He also knows that a long-term deal would push up the transfer price if Liverpool ever decided to sell.

But Crouch, 26, who has 18 months of his current deal to run, is prepared to play a waiting game, with a number of clubs such as Manchester City and Juventus monitoring the situation. Ideally, the striker would like to win back a regular place at Anfield but that has become harder since the arrivals of Fernando Torres and Andriy Voronin.

Ironically, when Crouch's autobiography is published later this month, it is full of praise for Benitez — but that personal respect for the Spaniard will not force him to sign a new deal.

Crouch has scored 17 goals in 46 Premiership starts for the Anfield club and helped them to win the FA Cup in 2006. He has also scored 12 times in 19 games for England.

Benitez and Liverpool chief executive Rick Parry put an offer on the table for him after tying up their priority players, Steven Gerrard, Jamie Carragher, Xabi Alonso and goalkeeper Pepe Reina.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

IF he moves it will be a downward step and his England chances will diminish even further.....

      Autobiography? For ****s sake.

It will be a step down. Apart from Macca, no one who has left us really goes on to bigger things.

His autobiography is called "Walking Tall" I think.

If Crouch isn't going to sign then we need to sell, I like Crouch as he adds something different to the team but we can't afford to let his value diminish as he would fetch £15M in todays transfer market.

Personally i feel a bit sorry for Crouchy.
He seems all of a sudden to be 4th pick for us which is harsh in my book. i'd pair him up with torres as our 1st choice upfront.

If the situation doesn't change much as the season progresses then he may well leave. i know he will get his chances but will Rafa pick him for the really big games. On the evidence so far, i'd say no.
Crouchy may well have to decide on being 3rd or 4th choice for us, or 1st choice for a Villa or newcastle.

I feel sorry for Crouch too. He has been painfully under used by Rafa since his debut season. Why he wasn't picked for the Champions league final I will NEVER know.
You can't blame his form, he's been scoring freely when he's picked, but his selection is so sporadic and random.
The bizarre thing is that when he wasn't scoring Rafa picked him every week *for an hour and then subbed him). Now he's in goal scoring form he can't get a kick

Maybe he scores too many goals for Rafa?

The problem is that Crouch is backup to Torres and Kuyt/Voronin fights it out for the second place upfront.

Torres is a much better player than Crouch so it will be a lot of bench/stands time for Crouch.

Why do you reckon Crouch is a back up or torres, the 2 players are completely different.

I feel crocuh could pair up well with Torres, just as he could with kuyt or Voronin. Personally, i prefer crocuh to kuyt any day of the week.

If you look at our games this season then Torres has played with one of Voronin/Kuyt and not with Crouch.

So I only go by how we have played this season.

I can't see Rafa playing Torres and Crouch upfront. Crouch is good at the same things as Torres but Torres is so much better at a lot of other things.

So Crouch doesn't add anything extra anymore that Torres can't give us.

If he doesn't want to sign we should show him the door. Let him go and play every week in meaningless matches for the likes of Newcastle or West Ham.

That's a bit harsh kurt, the lad just wants reassurance that he's still in the managers plans because from the looks of it, he isn't.
He's better off playing for the likes of West Ham and Newcastle than not playing at all.
I have no problem with Crouch, he's been a bargain signing and has only ever given 100% to the cause. He's never whinged publically even though he's been very harshly dealt with by Rafa.

Its very hard on crouch but if he stays i bet he will get plenty of games and be a very succesful player. There is just something about crouchie that doesnt look good isnt there? He can play brilliantly and personally i like the lad but even i think that he probably isnt our best bet as 1st or 2nd choice striker.
I would like him to stay because I think he will get games and he can and does do a good job when selected, but at the first sign of real unhappiness its best to get shot of him. Or any other player come to that.
