I'd guess it may stem from the division of the Ancient World between Western (Greek) and Eastern (Persian) spheres of influence and therefore geographically would be centred on the Hellespont.

If societies further north had become dominant, literate and been claimed as precursors by subsequent civilisations then the division may not exist.

Incidentally, Jared Diamond treats Eurasia as a single landmass in his environmental history approach precisely because there are no geographical barriers comparable to the barriers on other continents (including the fact that the whole supercontinent is within a relatively narrow range of latitudes).

I have to say that I used to look forward to them, but as the nature of the league has changed it's more important to me that LFC isn't torn asunder by such distractions. I suppose it might be down to national pride - and any I had has gone missing over the years.

He wroet Guns, Germs and Steel, a book detailing why certain civilizations (namely, Eurasian) had advantages over others in terms of technological, agricultural and societal systems, and how that determined the fates of many of the worlds peoples through history.

Having just today finished reading the last of the 400+ pages of that book, as illuminating as it was, I really didn't see f**k all about football in it.

I used to enjoy them, friendlies apart, but now they just eat up far too much of the club season.
I used to love watching the national team as well but these days i have complete apathy as to whether they win or not.
It might be different if McClown wasnt in charge but i doubt it.

Part of Russia is in Europe. The same logic applies to Turkey.

They want to be in UEFA because the competitions are worth much more money.

Anyway, it's something everyone has to deal with - if we're going to compete for the league a little two week break isn't going to have much effect.

Israel play in Europe because a lot of the Middle East countries have actually refused to play them in the past. They were invited by Uefa.

Just as we're settling into a dominant all beating total football mode we have the euro qualifiers.

I'm Irish and I love to see the national team do well but I couldn't give a **** if they never won a game again and Liverpool won No. 19.

I couldn't give a stuff about them to be honest with you, the season's long enough with out them, and to add to that, when a player get's seriously injured whilst playing for their national team, uefa couldn't give a stuff about the players or their clubs.
