I thought I read an interview a year or two ago with a Muslim cleric who stated that Muslims in exceptional circumstances or exceptional jobs were allowed to break Ramadan, and footballers fell under this rule?Originally posted by Ben Tover View PostIn Ramadhan, he has to eat before the crack of dawn which means before 4ish so he must be eating all his energy food and so fourth at that time. He breaks his fast at around 7.30ish in the evening. So thats around 15 hours, plus Rafa gives a break around mid day for the players to rest and sleep. He should be fine.
Did anyone else read that? Or am I making it up?

I'm pretty sure that's true (I'm muslim). I'm stopping playing football too during this month, but I can as its not my day job. I'm pretty sure my mum said the same thing to me too, that if you're job is dependent on you eating/ drinking then you shouldn't fast. I know if you're ill you don't have to fast. I think its ok to not fast as long as its a justified reason.Originally posted by Sus View PostI thought I read an interview a year or two ago with a Muslim cleric who stated that Muslims in exceptional circumstances or exceptional jobs were allowed to break Ramadan, and footballers fell under this rule?

Besides, I'm sure most muslim players do fast during this and I remmber this from a feature on Football Focus (Fredi Kanoute, Yousef Safri etc). When I was 18/19 and superfit, I used to play football whilst fasting with no problem - and I used to run like a ******* too. And for this reason, I think most Footballers will be OK as they are incredibly fit. I reckon the coaching staff will probably go easy on Momo during training days whilst he's fasting. I'm assuming he won't fast on matchdays. Muslims are allowed to make up for any fasting days they've missed after Ramadan - there's a 60 day period shortly after Ramadan when anyone can do this.My kebab comes with chilli sauce

In certain circumstances, I think you are allowed. He will need to refer to his local cleric for that matter. I don't think he will play loads during this month and if he does, I don't think he will fast.Originally posted by Sus View PostI thought I read an interview a year or two ago with a Muslim cleric who stated that Muslims in exceptional circumstances or exceptional jobs were allowed to break Ramadan, and footballers fell under this rule?

There is seven games during Ramadan, make your mind up which ones he'll play:
Portsmouth, Porto, Birmingham, Reading, Wigan, Marseille, Tottenham.
Also in the away fixtures he doesn't have to fast as he travelling more than 77km.

I'd let him play in all of those games that are more than 77Km away, which I think is all of them except for the Pie Eaters (no pun intended)Originally posted by Ben Tover View PostIn certain circumstances, I think you are allowed. That seems to tie in with what I was told by the locals when I was in Saudi, ie. certain professions under certain circumstances can break their fast!Originally posted by saj View PostI'm pretty sure that's true (I'm muslim). The RSAF blokes I worked with never broke their fast and followed their religious duties devoutly.
It is fair to say however there was a fair bit of a dip in their efficiency! So how a professional athlete copes without breaking his fast is beyond me!I don't need a lift, I need ammunition

It is an obligation for every Muslim to fast during the month of Ramadan unless like you say they cannot do so due to circumstances. However they will have to make up the fast that they missed. Likewise women that go through menstruation are not allowed to fast during that period but again they will need to make up for the fasts that they missed.
I for one am looking forward to Ramadan and I hope my fellow Muslimstake advantage of this blessid month.
