    Best midfield in the world

Was singing the 'Best midfield in the world' song to my bluenose mate tonight and he almost agreed with me, but at the last minute said AC Milan have a better midfield, albeit its a very close call

I put forward the following argument

Kaka - honestly? given the choice between Gerrard or Kaka, being a red aside, I'd still take Gerrard if I had to choose
He's the ultimate midfielder. Does everything, and does it best

Gattuso - Problrm here, is Gattuso would compliment Gerrard perfectly. He's got aggression and tackling not far off Mascher's, and he can pass pretty good too, albeit not to Alonso's standard
Saying that, I think Mascher's defensive duties are more important than an increase in playmaking skills.
And back to the man above, if Gerrard has someone he can totally rely on (ala Lampturd & Makalele a season or 2 ago) to do the defensive work and mop up, then we'd see more goals than ever.
    So, I'd genuinely take Mascherano

Seedorf - Class in his prime, and still a great player, but past his best. Problem now is matching those players up as Milans midfield is a different strategy to ours. On that basis, yep I'd rather have Alonso.

Pirlo - Ok so this is where it falls down. Pirlo would get into our first eleven in my opinion

So, 3 out of 4 aint bad in my book, what does everyone else think??
I saw a dead fish on the pavement and thought "what did you expect?"
There's no water round here stupid, should have stayed where it was wet

There's definitely an arguement there mate.

I think we may be more 'competitive' but compared to the Meelan quartet - we lose out on flair and creativity.

Pirlo would stand no chance of getting into the starting 11 with Masch and Gerrard. He might make the squad but I cant see our team without at least Momo or Xabi on the bench

I would have thought that Kaka would have been best compared to Kuyt in a one to one team mapping (and both classed as deep lying forwards). It is pretty obvious even to a Kuyt supporter like myself who wins in that comparison.

Then the deep lying midfielders comparison pits Gattuso and Pirlo against two of Gerrard, Alonso and Mascher. I think we win that.

Then we have the wide(r) midfield players so Pennant and Babel vs Seedorf and Ambrosini or Brocchi. I think that the Milan experience probably edges it but they are definitely a force in decline as our players improve. My guess would be that this is the last year when we would be behind them, especially if Pennant keeps improving.

agreed, the Milan midfield has an amazing amount of experience, but they are an ageing team. Ours is younger fresher and is becoming a great mix of flair and steel, also we have natural width, never considered Seedorf or Ambrosini as wingers.

As for the Kaka/Gerrard debate, tough one. But I dont think Kaka could play as well as Stevie in the CM position, but Stevie cannot play the AM role as well as Kaka. If we were to go 5 in the middle or play 1 off Torres, then I take Kaka for the free role and have Stevie dictating play from the middle. I would then add in Pirlo, Babel and Pennant to that midfield/

I'd say it's pretty close, and AC Milan's midfield is almost as good in a different way.

However, I felt we dominated them when we met a few months back, despite the result....

Should be the best "central midfield" in the world. Potentially babel can be world class, not yet though and Pennant is just filling the gap till we sign someone better, although inproving all the time.

Agreed, but those lyrics are nowhere near as catchy.....
