    Rafa calls for change

    Rafa calls for fixture changes
Rafael Benitez has expressed his anger at the fixture list, saying it was "impossible to prepare a team properly" after international matches.

Liverpool boss Benitez, like many of his fellow bosses, faces a rush this weekend as he prepares his side to face Portsmouth in the Premier league.

Many of the Spaniard's key players have been on duty with their countries in crucial Euro 2008 qualifiers and far-flung international friendlies and he believes the limited period of time they have to recover for domestic action is restrictive.

Liverpool's visit to Fratton Park on Saturday, a 12.45pm kick-off, is the first top-flight match of the weekend and Benitez has called for a change of policy.

He told League Managers' website: "I am really disappointed with the fixtures that we have because it is more difficult here in England. You play early kick-offs on the Saturday (after internationals) and it is impossible to prepare the team properly.

"The players arrive back on Thursday evening and the only thing you can do with some of them is just to run a little bit and send them home.

"Friday morning you will have a light training session and you will travel to Portsmouth in this case and you cannot prepare the team."

He added: "Normally the players that are going away are internationals because they are good players and you need these players for winning every game.

"For me it's impossible to prepare the team properly, you can prepare small details but to prepare the team physically and mentally for the game will be difficult."

Benitez went on to question the treatment of sides who compete in midweek in Europe and said the vagaries of the fixture list could cost teams a shot at the title.

"One of the things for me that is important now is to change the schedule for the top sides," he said.

"We had the same problem with the Champions League games; we were playing on the Wednesday, then kick off on the Saturday and normally away. I think it's not fair and in the end you have more problems winning these games.

"When you play for the title, if you lose two or three games away against 'normal' teams, after that you know maybe you can lose against the top sides and maybe your possibilities will be more difficult."

I think at the very least there should be an effort to make all games on the following an international week reasonably local. Last window it wasn't just the big clubs complaining as Reading were flagged up as having problems.

Stop all early kick offs for a start, with the exception of ones scheduled for safety on the request of the police.

From a personal selfish point of view, I love the early kick offs. 945pm on a sat night in Australia, unreal!

But if it means dropping points, I'm with Rafa. The earlies are OK but not after Euro matches or Internationals IMO.
Me, I’m either planning a holiday or I’m on one.

Teams should be given a mandatory 72 hours recovery period between games or simply if there are 3 or more of club players playing on a Wednesday that teams fixture should be automatically moved to Sunday. Common sense must prevail on this issue.

We can't play on Sunday this weekend because of the CL on Tuesday but I agree with you.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

the situation is far from good but that's the price you pay when you're managing a top team. you want champions league football? fair enough so play you're extra midweek games and get on with it.
you want the best footballers at your club? Accept that they'll be away on international duties ... get the feck on with it.

difficulty for us is that we are in the CL on Tuesday, so we're ****ed either way. If we play Sunday and get an extra days rest, then we wont have enough time to prepare for Porto.

Good on him. He has made this point before and he's right, its unfair, the least we should be having is a Saturday afternoon kick off- its a sham.

Arsenal travel a few miles to Tottenham at Saturdat midday
Scum play the Bitters a few miles away
Chavs play at home in the evening kick off

                            Is that fair?
