Originally posted by The Glove View PostIn seasons past we'dve been done there 2 or 3-0. Ok we didnt win but a point is better than nothing. Portsmouth is always a **** of place same as Bolton and Blackburn. It just wasnt our day. Forget talk of winning the league, its to early either way. What we are looking for is improvement on last season and moving forward and if were up there in a few months then we can talk about number 19. Last season we got turned over, this season we didnt. I'll take that.
We have a squad that is chokker with quality players. We argue often enough about who should or shouldnt play. That team today, Rafa thought, (and why shouldnt he?), be good enough to get points of them. In the end it looked like we were hanging on but we got a point.
Althogh we have had internationals, most of our team will have played their part in them, then before them we had played 3 games in 7 days, then the internationals, we play on Tuesday and then again at the weekend and so on so I can see why Rafa will have rested players. Gerrard still carried his injury and really, loads on here were saying he shouldnt just walk back into the side if he played for England, then Torres doesnt start, well the world and his wife was moaning about Dirk and then saying how great Voronin was and since Crouch and the Crow didnt really feature midweek it made sense to give them a run, now its the worst decision since, well since the last time we didnt win. Rafa cant win can he?
Idve loved to have seen Torres, Gerrard etc start but then they'd be playing again on Tuesday and then dare he leave them out at Anfield? Hell no because everyone would be moaning 'should always play your best players at home, rest them when we play blah blah blah'.
All comes down to, for me, is the fact that every season you improve on the one before. We have done that so far this season, we've even done it with a bit more flair at times. Ok we're all gutted we didnt win, but we are at the top with a game in hand. I'll have taken that at 12:44 and I'll take than now.Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, put your hands all over my body.

Years ago on Koptalk Mumsafan hit the nail on the head, it went something along these lines:
"Back in the days before internet, we went to the match on a Saturday, talked about it on a Sunday and by Monday it was forgotten and we looked forward to the next (midweek/weekend game, end of story. Nowadays with the internet it just goes on and on and on all week"
And to quote Red_Al from another thread (if I may, because I just think it hits the nail on the head again):

Well, that's the first time I've told someone or everyone to **** off. Not my style usually but there are too many dickhead posts. As said by a few sensible people on here, it's about improving, Pompey only lost 2 home-games last season, we came back from Internationals in which Gerrard shouldn't even have played, etc. etc. etc. The players out there had the potential to score goals and they didn't, who ****ing cares now, next game please.
But this incredibly pathetic doom-mongering, this constant bickering, 'Rafa got it wrong' and then coming out with the patronising armchair comments such 'Rafa can do no wrong' bollocks is ****ing annoying. People are so far removed from football management, which is why we're here and Rafa is getting on with it.
So ****ing what he didn't choose to play Torres from the start, so ****ing what he didn't play Gerrard, had Gerrard been injured in the first half everyone would be slating Rafa for bringing him back too soon and not giving him rest. They're not machines, we're in 4 competitions, we've got 60 odd games to play and Rafa is managing the team. He might always say 'We think only of the next game' but I bet you top dollar he's got several plans for the whole season sorted.
I just find this aggression towards Rafa and the team incredulous. It's fair enough to have a go but it just goes on and on and on, and what is the worst are hypothetical arguments 'What if...' and THEN having a huge ****ing rant although the scenario the rant's about didn't even come into existence. It's ****ing boring and a lot of times people expect every game to be like the Derby thrashing, and all fine and dandy. Get a grip, we're 5 games into the season, we've got a game in hand and we're 2 points off Arsenal with a real REAL chance of going all the way this season.
But at the first hickup ***** come out dishing it left right and ****ing centre, I wonder if those type of humans ever enjoy anything in life. I'm taking this season as it comes and I'm just full of hope and I never give up. If I'd have told anyone at the same stage last season the position we're in with the squad we have etc. everyone'd be biting my ****ing hand off. People just forget to see the big picture of where we're going and then just quabble over bull****. 1pt more than the corresponding fixture from last season, so ****ing well sit back and enjoy the ride a bit.
What, ****ing, ever. Some people will never change and don't give me the 'I have a right to my opinion', that's fair enough but the negativity and apocalyptical-type outlooks after 5 ****ing games this season really takes the piss.
Anyways, I can't post in the Library it's ****ing **** and it's ****ing as bad in here at times, it's people like fredo, sonsadesert, Glove etc. who make me come back because it shows not all is ****ing lost. And don't come up with the 'just being realistic', there is objective realism which is ample and then there's also subjective realism which is just another opinion skewed by one's own general negative outlook on many more things than just football.
****it, whatever

Some good points have been made re the excessive nature of some of the doom mongering that has been going on since the draw at Pompey. On the face of it a draw there isn't such a bad result and is an improvement on last season.
But the truth remains that every point could count in the league this season and we need to give ourselves the best possible opportunity to pick up as many points as possible. While that will inevitably mean resting key players on occasion to ensure they are at peak fitness for the business end of the season, I still think Rafa needs to be a bit wiser with his rotation. I think playing the likes of Torres and Gerrard yesterday and resting them midweek against Porto, and perhaps again v Birmingham if necessary would have been the better option if those players needed a break.White liquid in a bottle = Milk

Very fair point but I respectfully disagree with that.Originally posted by The Glove View PostPorto isnt a game to rest players. We want to get qualification done and dusted as soon as we can, then you can rest players.
I would rather fully prioritise the league and sooner rest players for Porto away than Portsmouth away. If we win all our home group games (which should be a formality, even if we rest players), plus win one away or draw a couple away, we will qualify comfortably, and top to boot.
Porto away is not a key game IMO.White liquid in a bottle = Milk

Well ideally you want to finish top of the group, and you mention a couple of draws and an away win, well you only have 3 games and rather than just bank on home form, Id rather go out there, full tilt, win the first 4 games home and away then ease up, than worry and have must win games as the games run out.Bill Oddie, Bill Oddie, put your hands all over my body.
