    How to win the league..

..this season is going to be tighter than ever and the occasional draw away from home isn't really going to make our break or season (despite what some people may say!). I think it's going to come down to one major factor this year and that is how well we do against the other top 3 clubs. It's the one area where we've been consistently poor and if we can turn that around then and only then, can we be serious about our chances of premiership glory.

I reckon if we score more goals than the opposition we will win more matches. I've been working on that theory for a while now and it needs some fine tuning but overall I'm pleased with it and I've applied for the Assistant Manager's job at Anfield. So far I've not had a reply but I'm still hopeful...

It's a good point. I also think the more games we win the better chance we have of winning the league.

i have to agree i think it will be possible to even lose 5-6 games and win the league. the teams between 5th and 10th in the table are more than capable of upsetting the "big 4" in there own back yards...........

you have hit the nail on the head about picking up points against the other big clubs where we have outplayed them at times and they sneak a late winner... it just shows how important the first goal can be in matches like these.

this year with more luck and hopefully better finishing we can pick up more points. maybe im blinkered but i see no reason to be scared of anyone in europe !!!

so already picked up 1 point from the possible 18.

          united at home 3 points
          united away 1 point
          arsenal at home 3 points
          arsenal away 1 points
          chelsea away 3 point

this will leave us with 12 from 18 and i would be happy with that however unrealistic it may seem now ??????????????
"Sky and Setanta have the right to choose their games and it will be the same for everyone. So Mr Ferguson will not be complaining about fixtures and a campaign against United.

"Or there is another option. That Mr Ferguson organises the fixtures in his office and sends it to us and everyone will know and cannot complain. That is simple."

I think you're right, that is a bit unrealistic compared to previous years:

            AGAINST ARSENAL, UTD, CHELSEA:
            2004/05 - 3 points
            2005/06 - 4 points
            2006/07 - 6 points

You could say we're showing signs of improvement - I'd take 10 points from the possible 16 if we were offered them now. Is that unrealistic/unambitious?

Arsenal had the best record against the top four teams, unbeaten in fact, however failed to show consistency throughout the rest of the season.

Rafa needs to be more attacking, less restricting against the 'Top 4'. I can understand the reason why he wants to control the side but at times Liverpool look the best when the players have loads of freedom especially at home. Away from home, he can discipline the side (two banks of four and two strikers pressing) thats fine, but at home we need to beat the Scum and Arsenal and hopefully win away at one of the 'Top 4' something Rafa has never done. My thinking against the 'Top 4' away from home is that the players don't seem to be mentally ready or whatever you want to call it, we do have times where we do dominate possession but don't take chances or don't even create them. That needs to change.

I don't think it comes down to just beating the top four even though we need to, we just need to keep winning and plough away at times when we might find it difficult. The thing with Liverpool is that we don't seem to look like posing a threat when we are under the kosh. Chelsea, Scum and the French all seem to have that something when they are counter-attacking. That is what Rafa needs to improve on: when we aren't on top, try and nick a goal.

Given how vulnerable the top four have been so far, it seems likely that the lesser clubs are more capable than ever of taking points off United, Chelsea & Arsenal.

With this in mind, i'd happily win virtually all the games against 'the rest' and less so against our rivals. Do that and we'd win the league.

So in short, i think the results between the top four will mean less than ever, when it comes to deciding the title.

                    I concur

Its never been down to our performances against the top 3 that has put us out of contention for the league, but more of the draws against Pompey or away defeats to Bolton where crucial points are lost and where the other 2 certainly (Mancs and Chelski) always seem to get something.

I disagree I think the league will be one by who does the best away from home.

                      tough grounds for 3 points

                      villa
                      pompy
                      west ham
                      spurs
                      n'castle
                      b'burn
bolton (well at least it used to be)
                      everton

who takes the most points away to that lot will win the league

If you mean last season, we beat them 4-1 at Anfield, didn't we? Agree pretty much with the rest though.
