          I believe so.

Therefore maximum embarrassment for Sam and usual minor distraction for Rafa on CL day.

Now in my defence this was before we knew the scope of any investment and I did say at the time Rafa could go on to win us many more trophies, including the Champions League, which he almost did of course in the following May. I also said that if he went back to Spain he'd probably win the league there with Real.

I think Rafa has done a lot of great things for the club and I remain optimistic that we'll at least be up there this season. I just don't think he spent the money in the Summer in the right areas to turn us into genuine title winners.

I'd point to the wide areas in particular as I'm struggling to think of a single goal this season that's been created by either the left-mid or right-mid at the time. At least not one in open play. Against the crap teams you can get away with this but when you're playing quality or well-organised sides you need that bit extra and despite spending over 120M I just don't think we've got it down the flanks.
When I last looked we'd only played 5 games, are unbeaten and have yet to concede a goal - a single goal - in open play and have a game in hand on most teams, have scored 7 goals more than the current champions having played one game less, have a goal difference of +9, the best in the division so your absolute assertions on our inevitable falure this season would seem a tad premature. Still, it's good to see that knee-jerk responses are alive and well on est1892. Keep up the good work!

Right next to Rebecca Loos in the skud "Big Sam slates Rafa".

                Seems about right I think.

For a start Benitez has only been manager for 3 years, so it's not like he's been plodding on in abject failure for a decade or so. Also, if he is saying that English managers have the Premier League higher than the CL in their priorities, as you assure us, this can only be based on supposition. How does he know this is the view of all English managers? Given that no English manager has won the league since 1992, perhaps they should re-assess their priorities if this is indeed the case

I think the statement was made well before that game.

He should, of course, have at least waited until after losing to Derby County before making any statement at all.

The league game after an international break is the worst time for them: they count the players out, then try to count them back in again. Javier Mascherano was one of the last to return. He had travelled through a dozen time zones, and back again, to play a friendly for Argentina in Melbourne, Australia, and Benitez could not consider playing him at Fratton Park after that.

"My players travel more than Willy Fogg," Benitez said to quizzical looks. "Willy Fogg? Around the World in 80 Days?" "Phileas Fogg, you mean." "Oh, yes, Phileas Fogg, sorry." The point was well made, though.

Aldo owned him and took him to school. Fat Sam probably was looking forward to lunch at that school where he was pie faced by Rafa who pretty much called him a dick

I wonder if 'Big Sam' slagged his mate Ferguson off when he didn't win the league for 7 years after joining the Mancs? :whatever:
