    Rafa angry at Pennant

Pennant has been walking a fine line for much of the season, and now he must learn the hard way after his red card in Liverpool's 1-1 draw.

The former Birmingham winger's form has improved tremendously over recent months but he has still clashed with officials this term and spent too much time arguing with them.

And in the Estadio do Dragao in the Reds' Champions League group A opener, he discovered an official - Slovakian Lubos Michel - who lost patience.

Michel was the official who awarded the controversial Luis Garcia goal that sent Liverpool to the 2005 Champions League final at the expense of Jose Mourinho's Chelsea, and he chose a game at the Stamford Bridge manager's former club to give Liverpool a hard time.

Pennant was chipping away at the official long before the first of his two bookings.

And he got no sympathy from his manager Benitez, who said: "We were really very bad in that first half, there are no excuses.

"We gave the ball away too easily and made too many mistakes. But the second half was much better. We needed to show real character and that is what we achieved.

"We were more organised, there was an excellent workrate and there were positives to be drawn from the second-half performance.

"We were playing against a good side and we have no complaints about the result."

And when Pennant was dismissed in the second half for a second bookable offence, Benitez said: "I have no complaints about the decision. It was correct.

"Hopefully Jermaine will learn from this experience. Maybe it will produce something positive for the future, the tackle in that position was just not needed.

"It is difficult to understand why he did it, we had talked to him about staying on his feet and not making rash challenges.

"We were even talking on the bench about taking him off, but we just did not get the time to do it."

Liverpool were under pressure from the first whistle, and Benitez said: "We started very, very badly and it is hard to explain why because our build-up and preparation had been good.

"It was easier to do the right things in the second period, but the damage had been done.

"We gave the ball away far too easily, we conceded clear chances and gave away a penalty that was also a correct decision."

Reds goalscorer Dirk Kuyt had some words of understanding.

Kuyt said: "He was unlucky. He tried to do his best and maybe it was a bit too much.

"But we were pleased because we played 30 minutes with 10 men. We didn't play well in the first half and I felt unlucky with the red card.

"In that first half we had problems passing. We tried to do it better in the second period and we worked really hard. With a bit of luck we could have won.

"But Porto are a really strong team and at least we didn't lose. If we can beat them at home we will be okay in this group."

Pennant is like a spoilt toddler who only has to shove a rusk in his mouth without falling over to get a round of applause - why is everyone so eager to heap praise on him?

As far as I can tell, he's a very ordinary player who occasionally plays above himself and this is enough to have people spouting about some mythical upsurge in form in recent months and worth a place in the England team etc. etc. Might it be more a case that he was starting off from such a low base that any step up looks like a massive improvement?

Maybe I'm having my period today or something but I'm getting hacked off with people bigging up Pennant - he's lightweight and gets knocked off the ball too easily, gives the ball away alot, dwells on it dangerously in his own half and seldom if ever beats his man to the byline and delivers a cross. It's no coincidence that there's rumours of a right-sided return for Stevie G.

Me too. I cannot understand why he gets the credit he does. I have tried to curb my impatience because I don't go to the matches and his fanbase must clearly be seeing something I am not. However, he has done little to impress me other than running defences ragged in the Reserves. And don't even get me started on the "ever willing" Kuyt

Pennant has been the player of the season so far.
I think it's a foul, and if the ref gives it. He got to give a penalty. I know it's outside the box, but you see them given that close to the area. So if the ref gives it he's got to give the penalty as it so close to the area. But I think it's a penalty. Robbie Savage 8/11/06

I love it when he plays well cause I know the critics will be quiet for a bit.

I ackowledge he turns in the odd decent performance but nothing like we should be happy to 'settle for.' I'm not saying he's useless, he's just a very average player that plays the odd good game for us and somehow on that basis gets lauded from on high.

Liam Brady on RTE summed it up I think - "brainless".

What he did - or maybe more particularly how he did it - was so premeditated that he clearly...

                      1. couldn't be arsed to consider the impact on the team of what he was about to do

                      2. was so stupid that he thought he had one life left with the ref

                      3. thought that he could cover it up by overtly pointing at the one thing he hadn't touched in the sorrounding 5 yards of the foul.

As fundamentally skillful as he may be, I think his general play does indicate that he is lacking in any form of intellegence - be it footballing or otherwise....I'm disgusted with him.

No wonder Wenger let him go.

                      A defensive mid for £18m?

He is mouthing off at the ref in almost every game and he is now starting to get booked for it.

Two bookings so far in the league for the above thing. That is just bloody stupid.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

you could see the second yellow coming for ages last night
He had a bad game and was shown up consistently by Queresma, that lad showed a lot of skill, vision, invetivness and hard defensive work all gaJust shows Pennant is prem class, but he is a player that we can improve upon.
