You're right to say he wasn't the best defender and more of a wing-back/ right midfielder but wasn't he signed during the pre-season that Houllier joined as joint-manager?
Heggem was one of the best wing-backs I've ever seen in my generation. In my opinion, he was a better player than Rob Jones. He was damn good at going forward and tracking back. He was a good tackler too and great crosser. Damn shame his career ended early. He's barely remembered as he only played 2 full seasons for us

He was a great wing back. Much better at that position than McAteer and was probably signed a couple of years too late for Evans' team. He had a great engine and could glide past players. But he was never in a million years a better player than Rob Jones who should have had 100+ england caps by now.
It's a crying shame for both players that their careers were cut short in the manner that they were.
