Admittedly his distribution was poor at times on Saturday but his tackling was awesome. He was still man of the match for me but then he didn't have much competition...

That game highlighted why we shouldnt dump Alonso (as did the Porto match for different reasons) despite the catcalls of many on here to do so

Mascherano is a very good player but he cant do everything that Alonso can

Alonso is superb at dictating the tempo and rhythm of the side hes a massive calming influence and we missed him dreadfully against Porto

On Saturday we needed to get the ball wide early and quickly to give our wingers more time on the ball. Alonso is a master of switching the play and he would have helped us in giving more space to the wingers

In short its horses for courses in regards to picking players, sometimes you need ball winners and holding players other times you need someone who can pick up your tempo and shift the ball

I still think Gerrard is suffering from his injury. I know football clubs have the best doctors and physios that money can buy but the guy did fracture a bone in his foot and he only had about two weeks rest before he played for England.

Surely that can't be enough!

I'm glad Aurelio is back in the mix. Some of his defending may be a bit suspect but his left foot crossing especially towards the end of the season was outstanding (especially against Arsenal)
