Dogged Rafa calls Torres back to front

FERNANDO TORRES will step unexpectedly back into Liverpool’s front line tonight with Rafa Benitez insisting doggedly he knows how best to handle the striker.

Liverpool’s £18million record signing started on the bench in Saturday’s damaging Premier League stalemate with Birmingham, but has been included in a almost full-strength squad for the Carling Cup tie at Reading.

Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher will also feature at the Madejski Stadium, as Benitez underlines his intention to fight for trophies on four fronts.

“I want to go forward in the Carling Cup, that’s clear,” said the Liverpool manager. “How we go about doing that is the question. If, with your squad, you can fight for four trophies then that’s perfect.”

Yet having overlooked Torres for a starting role at the weekend, and subsequently watching his side squander two points in a dour 0-0 draw, his methods will come under heavy scrutiny once again.

Benitez has become increasingly irked by the criticism his team selections have received – rumblings of discontent spread among supporters on Saturday – but served notice that he will not be railroaded into ditching his beliefs by selecting a travelling party packed with internationals.

Barring any last-minute disruptions, Torres is likely to be partnered by Peter Crouch at Reading. Brazilian defender Fabio Aurelio is also in line to make his first senior start since rupturing an Achilles tendon in a Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven in March.

Torres was restricted to a 30-minute cameo against Steve Bruce’s Birmingham – Benitez arguing that Andriy Voronin and Dirk Kuyt were better suited to playing against packed defences.

This was a startling admission, given the Spaniard formed the centrepiece of a £45m summer spending spree and was brought in to make a difference to Liverpool’s domestic toils.

The inclusion of Gerrard is also something of a surprise, since Benitez stated after the Birmingham game his captain was not “100 per cent fresh”, and blamed England for over-burdening the 27-year-old following his recovery from a broken toe.

“It depends on how the senior players are as to whether we think about using some of the reserves,” said Benitez. “I don’t want to promise them anything. Maybe I will use a team full of senior players.

“I don’t like to experiment. I prefer to be sure. If we need to use a player, it’s because we think he’s good enough, not because we want to experiment.” Liverpool, who beat Reading 4-3 at Anfield in the same stage of the competition last season, will hand a debut to French goalkeeper Charles Itandje, signed from Lens on a free transfer, as Pepe Reina is rested.

“Reina is a very good keeper and I am clearly going to be the No2,” said Itandje. “But there are 60 matches a season and it is planned that I will play in the League Cup and FA Cup.

“I could have joined Almeria in Spain as their first choice, but I didn’t choose the easy way. I preferred to join a very big club. It is up to me to create a doubt in the coach’s mind.”

Harry Kewell, who has yet to play this season, is again missing with Liverpool unwilling to take any risks with the Australia winger who has been nursing a groin injury.

“I don’t think he will be in contention. It’s too early,” said Benitez. “He is improving, but he still needs a little bit more time.”

Kewell’s contract expires at the end of the campaign and he will be free to talk terms with foreign clubs from January.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

if Torres plays tomorrow then I will really begin to question Rafa's judgment. Tomorrow is tailor made for Crouch

I doubt that Reading will play that much higher than Birmingham. If Torres plays then it's clear proof that the cups comes first and the league second and that means that it will be very difficult to win #19.

I don't give a **** about the CC and Rafa should do the same. The CC is for me a chance for the young players to prove that they deserve a chance. Rafa should start with almost the whole team that usually plays for our reserves and youth team.

If we get through playing almost our best team then that will just mean that the first team players will get more games to play and that will make it more difficult to win #19.

The point in Torres playing tomorrow might be to rest him next weekend and play him in the CL? Which means the cup comes first.

Fernando Torres absence was down to lack of space - Rafa Benitez

Sep 24 2007 by Chris Bascombe, Liverpool Echo

FERNANDO Torres’ absence from Liverpool’s starting line-up against Birmingham was a purely tactical decision, manager Rafa Benitez explained.

The Anfield boss felt Torres’ lightning pace would be less of a threat against an impressive visiting defence which sat deep for 90 minutes.

Benitez hoped strike pair Andriy Voronin and Dirk Kuyt would have the imagination to find their way through, but it turned into a nightmare afternoon for Liverpool’s attackers.

The frustration was evident as Liverpool squandered two more precious points which now leaves them four behind leaders Arsenal.

As at Portsmouth, Benitez stood by his controversial decision to leave Torres on the bench for an hour, although he was clearly unhappy with the lack of variety on display by the attacking quartet in his line-up

“You must be frustrated because you know before that you must win this kind of game,” he said.

“You could see we were attacking, especially in the first half.

“Clear chances are really difficult when the opponents play so deep. We had a lot of shots but they were off target.

“We tried in the wide areas, we tried to get crosses in. It was really difficult but if you have some chances you must take them.”

On Torres’ limited role, Benitez added: “We knew they would be deep and narrow and compact, so we needed the strikers to play between the lines.

“Kuyt and Voronin can do this. After, when we needed fresh legs, we brought on Fernando, but you could see how many times he got behind defenders. Never. That's because there was no space.

“I have four strikers and I need to use all of them.

“How you pick your team is something you always have to think about, and both Voronin and Kuyt have game intelligence.

Manager won’t change rotation policy - Sami Hyypia

Sep 24 2007 by David Prentice, Liverpool Echo

SAMI HYYPIA has branded critics of Rafa Benitez's rotation policy "silly"– after the Reds laboured to a potentially damaging goalless draw at home to Birmingham.

The Reds' boss left record signing Fernando Torres on the substitutes' bench until the final half hour of Saturday's clash.

But Hyypia said afterwards: “Everybody knows that the manager likes to rotate, and he isn’t going to change his style. Nobody said anything about that at the beginning of the season when we were winning games.

“But because we’ve drawn a few games people have started to talk about it again. It’s silly because that’s his style and he’s not going to change it."

Hyypia admitted that he was frustrated by the Reds' inability to break down Birmingham's blanket defence.

“It was quite frustrating," he added. "We created some chances, but not enough to score.

“There are many teams that will come to play like that and be happy to leave with a goalless draw.

“Maybe we need to figure out how to break them down earlier and get the early goal like we did against Derby. After the first goal it was pretty easy.

“Scoring is more difficult than keeping a clean sheet. Every game in the Premier League is a hard game whoever you play. We don’t underestimate anyone.”

Hyypia is hoping to be given a full week to prepare for next Saturday's trip to Wigan, but would be happy to play at Reading tomorrow if called upon.

“It’s the manager’s decision whether I play or not. But I’m not 20 years old any more and the recovery time isn’t the same as when I was younger. But I’m always ready when he needs me," he added.

“The unfortunate injury to Danny means I’m going to get some games now.

"I’m not very happy with the way I get them as I would prefer Danny to be fit and help the team."

I don't think he will start with Torres.
I could not dig, I dared not rob:
Therefore I lied to please the mob.
Now all my lies are proved untrue
And I must face the men I slew.
What tale shall serve me here among
                        Mine angry and defrauded young?
