    Coppell's comments on Torres

"He didn't contribute much in the first half but that is the quality of £20-odd million.

"He gives them what they don't have with other players and that is just raw pace.

"A couple of times it wasn't a question of intricate play, it was just a question of kick it and run and he can run quicker than most.

"Realistically he is yet to set the world on fire in this division but as he got his goals he grew in stature. We had to take more gambles and that only opened up more avenues for him."

I hope I haven't broken forum etiquette by opening this as a new thread, but I couldn't find reference to these comments elsewhere.

There was much more on show here than 'just raw pace'. There was an intelligence in his runs, there was physical strength, there was determination and resolution.

I have thought quite highly of Coppell and these comments don't seem to do him justice. Is he like this normally? Is he correct? Is he misquoted?
"Sir, it's me sir. Jennings sir."

Coppell claims to be a Liverpool fan despite playing for the Mancs for years. He is normally very astute and a good judge of football which is why he left the Citeh job after just a few weeks!

Obviously we saw more from Torres last night than just "raw pace" but I think Coppell was trying to say that Torres' sheer speed was the main factor in getting his goals. Managers always state that pace is one of the best attributes any player can have but if it was all you needed then the Mancs would have signed up Darren Campbell ages ago...
There is a light that never goes out. RIP Alan "Mally" Johnston and the 96. YNWA.

In the first half, Reading were doubling up on him continously, and kicking him all over the pitch. At no point did he let that affect him. Once he got his first, he ran them ragged.

One of things I like best is that I can't remember the last time a LFC player rounded the keeper to score. Torres has now done it twice this season already.

He has so much more than pace though. He is strong, can finish, and links up really well. Seems to have a first class attitude too.

Makes a change from Cisse and Diouf I tell you.
          Oh I don't know.

You could say that about Baros, Cisse, Collymore and plenty of others too. It was embarassing.

Owen would usually beat the keeper with a shot when through on goal. Torres just dribbles it past him.
              Oh I don't know.

I said it to a mate last night - any one of the othe strikers we currently have at the club would have taken the early shot. Torres is the only player we have who has enough confidence in his ability to go round the 'keeper.

Regarding Coppell's comments - he's usually quite a fair manager and I'm sure he wasn't trying to be disrespectful.
What have I learned, Mr Mackay? Three things. One - bide your time. Two - keep your nose clean. And three - don't let the *******s grind you down

It was in the shameful home defeat to Crystal Palce in an FA Cup replay, and the final straw for Heskey - and possibly Ged as well. He ran all the way from the Half Way Line and dithered pathetically.

Owen missed a dozen that night as well.

Crouch versus Everton at Woodison the other season springs to mind

i don't second his comments at all, especially not the torres is just 'kick and run and raw pace' part. he's pacey, strong, determined and simply a ****ing gifted footie player.
all the kicking and bullying seemed to make him even more determined and stronger - and that's what has so far surprised me most about him!

I tend to think that he was saying that the pace was the one thing that his team couldn't defend against, which is fair enough. To be honest a lot of Henry's goals (especially against us) were a bit kick and run, but a lot weren't but he is right to say that Torres hasn't "yet" (his word) set the league a light. That doesn't mean he won't.

People are always looking to pick apart peoples words on here when normally people are just seeing the world from their point of view. Reading won't get exposed like that often largely because very few players have Torres pace and acceleration. That doesn't mean that Torres didn't have to be strong or intelligent to use it from our perspective.

i all fairness to him, the comment made about kicking it and running implies that he did that on a couple of times. to me this is him saying 'the lad ****ing arse raped us in every way you can imagine. he had the skill to walk it round my keeper but he also had the pace to keep it simple, knock it forward and burn my defenders away'
                            in january we were doomed.

in august we will rise from the ashes of ****e and march on again
