    Great rafa interview

    link fixed.
    audio.
Really revealing, goes into a lot more detail than normal in UK interviews.
especially convincing on rotation. should shut a few people on here up
It's really clear that he's rotating because he needs super-fit players at the sharp end of the season.
"I need torres fit for the last games of the season ...the champions league, not against birmigham"
You can't play your best players 30 -40 games in a row and not expect them to suffer throughout the season..

BTW. the sacking refers to when he was in spain....misleading teaser headline.

      .
You make it sound like he's writing the Premiership off and only going for the CL, he said the last 10-15 games ie when you're in a title run in, CL, FA Cup etc. Not sure if that was your intention or not but thats how it comes across.

People can listen and make their own mind up. I never stated that he said he wasn't bothering with the league. The quote about torres is pretty much verbatim but it illustrates that he's going to pick and choose which matches he considers important in terms of rotation. He also makes it pretty plain that he thinks the team against birmingham should have been good enough to win without torres.

It's clear to me from this interview that he thinks we've got a good chance to win everything.

"I don't need Torres for playing Birmingham if I have Dirk Kuyt, Andriy Voronin and Peter Crouch," he said.

"I need the speed of Torres in the last game of the season - maybe a Champions League final or to win the league."

"Those are the decisions of a manager," he added.

"When you are playing for winning trophies you must analyse everything and say 'OK for the last 10-15 games I need Torres fit'," he said.

"People are talking about players playing a lot of games now. They can do it. I don't say that they can't.

"You can play 20, 25 or 30 games in a row. No problem. Everybody can do it. The problem is at the end of the season after 30-40 games.

"The last 10-15 games you are playing for trophies and you must be fresh, ready and fit."

The problem with this is IF he hasn't played our best players and we have got draws/losses where we should have won we will not be in contention for the trophies.

There must be a happy medium?
              We come not to play.

It's not as if since he's been here he gives Gerrard, Carra and co every other week off, it's only a couple of games for them 2 here and there. Maybe the bottom line is we haven't been good enough. Not sure about this season but thats certainly true of the other years.

Every manager rests people occasionally, I remember last year when Ferguson rested something like six first teamers in one game. We just havent been good enough.

Still unbeaten in all competitions. If we hit a really bad spot of form and lose a few then we can have a sensible discussion about rotation. The knee-jerk rubbish we've had recently is completely over-the-top. In fact it's getting tedious in the extreme.

Rafa has his own plan and just have to see how it works - I totally agree that we should have beaten Birmingham without Torres, but IMHO Torres should have played v Pompey. As someone already said, I hope Rafa has the last laugh.

                      Agree

But i think he needs to add Torres to Carra, Gerrard, Reina and Agger as players he does not rotate.

Torres had played mid-week in an international before pompey. Gerrard wasn't really fit. He's admitted as much today. We should have beaten birmigham.

We need to be good enough to win games without torres anyhow. what happens if he breaks his leg, or does a hamstring?

Rafa believes it's the way to get the best results over the whole season. People need to calm down and accept that maybe Rafa knows best.

The team that was picked should have beaten Birmingham. Unfortunately, this is sport and things don't always turn out as planned!

Or we could just play Torres every game until his legs fall off, which seems to be what some are calling for.

And have our absolute key players playing 70+ games a season? Unfeasible, they'll be completely knacked by the time we get to the sharp end of everything.

and that interview is why we have one of the best managers in the world. The man is a legend and I hope he is at the helm of our club for many years to come.
