I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, because they'd never expect it.

Having a leg break is an unpleasant and difficult experience, but I bet the kid will make the most of this - he'll have media attention and a celebrity fawning over him plus he gets time off school. I would imigaine that if you're going to break a leg then that age is as good as any to do it as it will probably heal well and be as good as new.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has made a bed-side visit to the boy who was injured when he collided with the footballers player's car.

After a session at the club's Melwood training ground this morning Gerrard went to see Jamie Hellawell, 10, in a ward at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in West Derby, Liverpool.

Gerrard had been at the wheel of his £140,000 Bently GTC convertible when the schoolboy ran out into Grantham Road outsdie Our Lady of Lourdes Primary School.

Jamie is said to be in a stable condition after being transfered from Ormskirk District General Hosptial to Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool where he was scheduled to undergo an operation on a compound fracture of his left leg.

Gerrard gave a signed England shirt and boots to a "speechless" Jamie.

His mother, Helen Hellawell, from Birkdale, said: "I was really shocked when my Dad came and told me that Jamie had been knocked down. I went straight to Grantham Road, where it happened. Steven was shocked and upset and was holding Jamie's hand. He was lovely and waited with us until the ambulance and police arrived.

"Jamie is quite chirpy and is putting on a brave face. He was absolutely delighted that Steven came to visit him in hospital today and was speechless when he saw the special gifts that Steven had brought him."

Jamie, a Manchester United fan, was especially pleased to receive the signed boots, belonging to the club's star striker Wayne Rooney.

Gerrard said he phoned Rooney after discovering Jamie was a United supporter and arranged for the boots to be collected overnight.

Gerrard, who made his hospital visit after training with Liverpool, also met other children on the wards and posed for photographs and signed autographs.

He said: "It was a real relief to see Jamie sitting up and smiling. I wasn't too sure how pleased he'd be to see me, given he's a United supporter, so I thought an England shirt might be a bit safer than a Liverpool one!

"Wayne has been really supportive too. I hope Jamie's up and about again very soon.

The England star was said to have been visibly moved at the scene of accident. Gerrard, who dashed across to comfort the injured boy and held his hand until an ambulance arrived, told watching mums: "The lad just came out of nowhere."

Several of the bystanders were nurses and also rushed over to help Jamie, who was screaming in agony.

Police arrived and questioned Gerrard, who has a conviction for careless driving, at the scene.

Speaking after the crash, Jamie's grandfather Reg Rogan, who had been picking up his two other grandchildren from school, said that his grandson was "very brave."

Gerrard, he added, was clearly distressed over the horrifying incident.

"Steven Gerrard knelt down and held (Jamie's) hand and he seemed genuinely upset," Mr Rogan said. "You could tell he was in shock."

One witness said: "The lad ran out from behind a parked car and just went flying.

"Stevie slammed on the brakes but it was too late.

"He was in a blind panic — and in tears. But people were telling him it wasn't his fault."

A resident, how lives opposite the school gates, said: "A lot of mums were picking their kids up from school and there were some nurses among them still in their uniforms.

"They gave the lad first aid at the side of the road. It took about 20 minutes for the ambulance and police to arrive and Steven stayed with him the whole time."

Another witness added: "Gerrard's car wasn't going fast. The lad just ran straight into the path of it — and it hit him side on.

"Ambulancemen put a brace on his left leg and a mask on his face to give him oxygen.

"The police questioned Gerrard for about ten or 15 minutes in a police van and blocked the road off."

Jamie, a Manchester United fan - was taken to hospital where he x-rays confirmed his leg was broken in two places.

A spokesman for the Liverpool ace said: "Steven was driving very slowly through an area of Birkdale when a young boy ran out and hit the side of his car.

"Steven comforted the boy until the paramedics arrived."

"Steven later attended a police station where he produced his driving documents as a matter of routine and made a statement about the accident.

Gerrard lives about 12 miles from the scene of the crash in Formby, on a £3 million country estate with wife Alex Curran and children Lilly-Ella, three, and Lexie, one.

In 2004 he was fined £1,000 and given five penalty points for driving without due care and attention in his Audi A4 Turbo Cabriolet.

Nice touch there from Stevie - but is anyone else wondering why a resident of Liverpool supports the Manc Scum?

The article must have been written by a 'pool fan. "...he collided with the footballers player's car."

Rather than 'he was run down'.

I don't know about that. They also mention that Gerrard has a driving conviction in the same breath as when mentioning this accident - are they hoping any inferences are made from that?
