And a barnstorming captains performance against Villa. He was also very good against Chelsea with his broken toe.

For ME though barnstorming isn't good enough (I know selfish bugger I am ). He needs to draw a barnstorming performance out of the TEAM not just him. Xabi can do that SG can't and that is where the problem is. Goes back to an imact player vs. one who can control the game.

i agree with those you say sg shouldn't be above rotation and yes he should be dropped if he's off form.
and i agree with those who say his best position isn't cm. he needs freedom to make his powerful runs, to arrive late in the box.
he bossed our midfield during the houllier days due to the fact the head and shoulders above everyone else but this is not the case any more. all the he's our best player ****e i'm sick of. people should start to treat him like everyone else. the lad is not above criticism, end of.

            Hard man to please hey

I don't think we need worry about Stevie I really don't. I would put money on him if selected scoring on Sunday. I think the fact the Momo played like a 10 year old last night rubbed off on our captain.

I'm much more skeptical, because for me a goal isn't enough, I'll only be pleased if we don't get over run in midfield and are able to provide quality ball to the wingers and strikers.

As a midfielder those are the things that matter first and foremost, and TBH I don't think he gets it.

I understand and appreciate SpeedyG's comments and I agree with a lot of them.

I think Xabi and Mascherano are the most disciplined CM pairing. It's always difficult to criticise Gerrard because he's such an icon for us.

However, going back way back when there was the whole Stevie->Chelsea saga, I can imagine that Rafa had to imagine that he might have to get someone else in who needs less accomodation on the pitch and would slot in easier alongside Xabi + another CM (Masch).

What I'm trying to say is, if we had a player instead of Gerrard who had a more definitive role, for example Kaka or whoever, it might be easier to keep the team in balance.

It might all just be bollocks as I, technically, know little about football and tactics and whatever and whatnot, but I can just imagine that Rafa sometimes might have a bit of a headache about accomodating SG, moreso than he would with a player who has a more definitive role which is the only role he plays and one that gets played to perfection.

Just for the record, I don't think Stevie should be sold, however I appreciate it when people entertain the possibility.

I thought I was gonna get slated for this but it appears that some people are slowly coming to the same conclusion about SG and centre midfield.

just like the other thread bashing momo people on here seem to forget that one player doesnt make a team. not even stevie g. i would have put him on the right last night and player masher but that's great in hindsight isnt it. the lineup that started - as with birmingham - should have won the game. the players have to stand up and take the blame.

if the whole team is playing sh1te (exception of finnan) then what do we expect? If we have a capable attacker on the right, Stevie is best in the middle with alonso and/or masher. Simple as that.

                              So we missed pennant...
In my opinion, Gerrard is not above dropping. He shouldn't be guaranteed his starting place, and again in my opinion, Alonso and Mascherano work better together than Gerrard with either of them.
