Is there one reason or many reasons

After last night I've tried to put together what has been going wrong with us over the last few games.

Ok so last night was our first defeat this season but 4 out of our last 5 have been poor peformances and in stark contrast to the way we started the season.

What's gone wrong is it rotation, is it Paco leaving, is it quality of some players is it the injuries or is there a power struggle between Stevie and Rafa over the England affair.

Personally I don't know for definite but I feel it's a combination of all of the above.
I think Rafa had put his foot down regarding Stevie playing for England but Stevie ignored it hence he was dropped against Portsmouth.

I also feel Stevie thinks Torres should start every game and while agreeing mostly with the rotation policies he feels like most that a core of players should start nearly every game.

I also feel based on comments from various players Alonso in particular that Pako is a big loss and the liasion between Rafa and his players is gone and communication seems to be lacking.
The injuries to Alonso and Agger have affected us more than they should but again I wonder is that because of the other factors above although Sami a good and wonderful defender/servant to the club is not the CB he once was.

Then there is the quality of some players that on a night like last night can be called into question Momo was shocking and I wonder is he good enough to play for us these doubts came up in my mind last year and I thought this year he started well but seems to have lost his way again(maybe the Pako affect here)

Then there is Crouchy whom all pre-season was poor and has not got going at all this season, granted he hasn't been given as much as other players but he has supposedly being stirring it also I do think he is to slow and limited and that maybe this will go against him.

The Crow and Yossi need time so I will reserve judgement there but I think Momo and Crouch need to up their games big style to remain at the club.

As for rotation it has in the main stood us well but I would like to see a little more continuity until we get back to the desire and style of play we had for the first 6 games.

Overall I have a lot of faith in Rafa and we have some incredible players we need to get past this malaise and if we can return to our form of Aug then we can achieve quite a lot this year.
Come on Red men lets see some heart again.

    Nothing wrong mate.

A result against Spurs and everything will be fine again.

The expectation is a lot higher now due to money spent and some names coming into the side.
Also the fact that was our first home group stage defeat in 5 years.

Stevie G is captain and a leader.
When he plays well the team play well.

Could you see Rafa dropping a fit Steven Gerrard?

If he did and we lost he'd get slated.

If he did and we won it would be
"The team doesn't have to always rely on him " etc

I was actually looking forward to seeing Leto start last night due to seeing him in previous games.

    Still early days yet.

Valid points mate and I hope you're right that there is nothing wrong but there was no effort last night which is what worries me not that we got beat but how we got beat.

It reminded me of the FA Cup defeat to Portsmouth in GH's last season.

As for the points above agreed expectation is higher but so were our peformances and the contrast between both we look like a completely different side in the last 4-5 games.

As for Stevie he really needs to be a leader right now and he's not showing it.
We need him back no more excuses he's playing where he wants and he has better quality around him, step up Stevie G.

        Totally agree with that

I think Paco leaving has been a big blow remember Rafa has worked with this bloke for over a decade so it's bound to take a while to adjust.

I don't know about this Stevie and Rafa power struggle. By all accounts Rafa seemed happy for him to play for England and I haven't read or seen anything about a rift or a power struggle. I also don't know how you have drawn a conclusion that Stevie thinks Torres should start every game? Has he said something or do you know him?

I also feel based on comments from various players Alonso in particular that Pako is a big loss and the liasion between Rafa and his players is gone and communication seems to be lacking.

        I agree with that

        Agree with that

        And that

Then there is Crouchy whom all pre-season was poor and has not got going at all this season, granted he hasn't been given as much as other players but he has supposedly being stirring it also I do think he is to slow and limited and that maybe this will go against him.

Crouch needs to step up to the plate. He needs to take his chance like yossi did against Reading and Wigan. He needs to put up or shut up IMO.

The Crow and Yossi need time so I will reserve judgement there but I think Momo and Crouch need to up their games big style to remain at the club.

        Agree with that

Again I agree. 1st 2 league games this season we were unchanged and you could tell.

Overall I have a lot of faith in Rafa and we have some incredible players we need to get past this malaise and if we can return to our form of Aug then we can achieve quite a lot this year.

IMO I think he feels in order to make progress especially in the league we need the creativity and skill of Torres(most of us would agree) for as many games as possible.
Again mate just my opinions based on observation rather than anything concrete.

I always felt Stevie's first attempted departure was as a result of how GH was treated by the club and I wonder if Pako leaving and Torres not playing has created frustration along with what I think was Rafa behind the scenes saying don't play if you're not 110% fit for England.

I believe Rafa thinks he wasn't and shouldn't have played again pure speculation on my part.
