Originally posted by mersey86 View PostWhatever it is, its depressing. I was a regular throughout the eighties. Yes I was one of the fortunate ones who grew up on Liverpool success. There were times I'd get frustrated - such as the slow display in the first half of the European Cup semi-final against Panathinaikos in 1985 - but some older head would point out that we were just biding our time .. and sure enough we won that game 4-0. I loved the constant success and I loved the way each generation would pass on the love of the game. We were famous worldwide for our love and knowledge of the game.
Towards the end of the 80s I noticed a change. There were people on the Kop who just wanted a moan, maybe they were spoiled by success, maybe society was changing - prawn sandwiches and all that .. I hate that the game has been taken away from the working class. Whelan and Houghton took a lot of stick (Whelan, in particular, unmerited) and people seemed to come to the game with the plan of having a whinge rather than getting behind the team.
One of my favourite moments at Anfield came in our last league winning seaon. I was due to travel to Italy but my last home match was against Millwall. It was 0-0 with 10 minutes to go - a bad result and people were frustrated. They hit the bar and the whinges grew, but I saw the opportunity and managed to get a roar going. We headed down the other end, got a corner, scored, won and did not look back. Doubtless I overplay in my own head my part, but the fact is that crowd encouragement plays a big part. The current team get very little when they need it most. Maybe they are paid a lot of money, maybe tickets are expensive. Maybe it is resented that entertainment is not providing value for money, but at the end of the day, what do we want .. number 19! and if we are not prepared to support through the wind and the rain, then we as Liverpool fans are not preserving our heritage and we do not deserve it.
The change from the league to the Premier League has brought about loads of change. It brought money and influx of foreign players which has improved the standard but as a result the "brand" of the premier league is world wide. Something had to give and football can sometimes be considered corporate business. Ticket prices have rose (more than inflation). In the early 80s a person on the dole could go to a saturday game. Now the game has much more global appeal. Cheap flights have allowed fans from all over to come, which is good, but the result is basic supply demand. Ticket prices have rose so you wont get the throw back to yester year when you would go to a game and have the same folk there week in week out. I would imagine that around 40% of Red fans at a game were not at the previous oneLast edited by paulc; 08-10-07, 12:49 PM.

As this site proves, we have the most fickle and complacent 'fans' in the world, myself included. Because of our history of unparalleled success, our supporters expect us to batter every team 4, 5 or 6-0 every game.
When we do we have the loudest and best fans in the land regardless of where they hail from. Sadly, when we don't win comfortably (which is more often than not) Anfield is like a library as the Spurs fans sang yesterday.
The only exceptions nowadays are league matches against the Blue ****e, Mancs and Chelsea plus the big European nights (but only when we deem the opposition 'worthy').

On a separate note, two knobheads even threw their scarves onto the pitch from the Anfield Road end yesterday before Torres equalised... :whatever:There is a light that never goes out. RIP Alan "Mally" Johnston and the 96. YNWA.
