Excellent point about Crouch and Torres but what about when speed doesnt work and we need to use one of Rafas famous "options" we need another method of unlocking defences and Crouch, when on form provides this. Torres can not and will not play every game and I cant see Kuyt scoring the needed 15 goals this season. Crouch will, given a good run inthe side.Originally posted by AFII View PostTorres is doing the job Crouch did last season and much more.
We play a quicker game now, well, we are at least trying to do that, and that don't fit Crouch playing style.
Crouch slows down our game more than Voronin and Kuyt do and both of them also links up better with Torres because they are quicker than him.
We can't use Torres excellent link up play if Crouch plays with him, we can do that if Kuyt or Voronin plays. Those that hid Anne Frank were breaking the law.
Those that killed her, were following the law.

Except, he isnt.
Rafa's rotation policy doesnt take form into account when a player has a blinder, so why should it take form into account when crouch (or anyone else) is poor?Originally posted by fah-q View PostIm not knocking the rotation thing, but this is a fair point. It's my only real beef with rotation, regardless of form players know they will get dropped/picked.
The old adage of playing for your place stood us well for a long time. You guys make fair points.Originally posted by DJS View PostThe RCDNW brigade wont hear this.
Every other manager uses form as a guide, every pundit/analyst thinks it's the best way.
Sorry but they're not ALL wrong.
DJS - I hope you're not implying I am a member of the RCDNW brigade; remember a few weeks ago I was with you and Cobain criticising the team Rafa put out at Pompey, and subsequently where I've argued that Rafa doesn't seem to be rotate as efficiently or as wisely as the other top managers. But remember Rafa is taking a long term view whereby we are primed to be at our peak in the final stages of the season - so let's see how we go then before judging him and his methods too soon.
It is correct to say Crocuh isn't getting his fair share of playing time compared to the other 3 strikers, but I think it is also fair to say he has been the poorest performer of the three when he has played - may be there is some correlation there? Or may be as AFII has pointed out Crouch just doesn't offer us as much in the system Rafa wants to play?
I don't feel it is right to say as fah-q has suggested that the rotation system takes all the motiviation out of playing, playing well and trying your hardest. A player knowing he will get games because of rotation and similarly knowing he will be rested regardless of form should not preclude a player from being motivated. At the end of the day as much as Rafa rotates, he will always pick his best XI for the key games (important league games, CUp Finals etc) and so the players should realise they need to be at their best and giving it their all if they want to play in the key matches. So even if the players are not playing for their place in the team every week, they are at least playing for a place in the manager's thinking for the big matches.White liquid in a bottle = Milk

It's not as easy as turning it on like that though, some players are capable whereas others need to time to build up their level of match fitness and their understanding with other players. Look at Mascherano for example, he is a quality player but put him in the wrong formation or personnel and he struggles like he did at West Ham.
And Rafa doesn't always pick the best XI for key games, he regularly picks formations that he thinks will stop the opposition and then chooses players based on how hard they will work in the positions. For example the Athens final, when it was obvious playing Kuyt on his own would not bring goals as it hadn't done in earlier games against Man Utd and Man City. Great, we stopped Milan apart from a lucky goal for them, but by the time we actually set about trying to win the game properly we were already losing it with time running out.

And then how Crouch, despite no longer being first choice, was able to finish top scorer for the club, one of the top scorers in the Champions League and posted a very impressive 76% win record compared to 36% for the rest of the strikerforce?
Or how about when Rafa then went and spent over 40M without buying a single quality wide midfielder to pick out Crouch with crosses?
I'm not saying Crouch is a world class striker but a lot of people don't realise how effective he can be for a team. Rafa included.

The reason he'd be angry is that Kuyt is continually selected ahead of him, despite him having the worst technical abilty of any Liverpool striker in recent times not named Erik Meijer. And the fact that when it comes to getting into scoring positions he bottles it.
Believe me Crouch has his faults, but technical ability and scoring goals aren't two of them.
Yet a player who's rubbish in both those areas plays instead - and we're talking about strikers here remember. Wouldn't you be angry?

Crouch was playing or England before Rafa signed himOriginally posted by Ben Tover View Post
Rafa and the team stuck by him and he should be thankful for being in the England squad because of Rafa
