Good article it's like a short hand version of about 3 Tomkins articles. Rafa will get it right in the end.“Me having no education. I had to use my brains.”

we are very lucky to have rafa as our manager and he has brought success to us with a decent but not great team.
In his time with Valencia his style of football was different to what spanish football was used to. His teams were built from the back and very well organised. The whole football ethos was structured around having a solid defence with quick counter-attacking players.
When Valencia started playing this way they took La Liga by storm and thus had their best ever period of sustained success in their history. Spain had never seen this type of footballing philisophy before. He enjoyed a lot of success.
However, his brand of football has struggled to make an impact on the Premiership. In the English league most of the sides are well organised and sound defensively and therefore liverpool do not have anything from a structural point of view that the others dont.
We take for granted that our rivals manchester united, arsenal and chelsea will have good defences and not give away silly goals but even the second and third tiers of the premiership have good defensive teams like everton, blackburn, portsmouth.
I might be wrong but I think that Benitez's philosophy worked so well in spain because the other teams werent organised properly. If you look at the spanish league some of the defending is pretty poor. Real Madrid is a case in point. But the spanish way is swashbuckling football with great forward play. They didnt really appreciate good defensive displays.
In England good defending is a given for most teams. That might be one of the reasons that Rafa never brings the premiership to Anfield. I hope im wrong.
