I think both of you have a point but in many ways the key is that Man United with Rooney as a deep striker require a lot of their threat and creativity to come from the wide midfielders and have struggled when it doesn't. After a good start to the season from Pennant none of our wide players have really given us anything.

I think you have to look at the attacking quartet (quintet possibly - including Gerrard/Scholes) rather than any individual to assess the problems & strengths both tactically and in terms of personnel of both teams.
