    Strikers (Old vs. New)

I think it's a given that Rafa has finally cracked it by signing (what many people were crying out for for years) a top class striker in Torres. However the jury is out on his other strikers. I don't think Rafa has painted himself with much glory in the way he has handled the strikers he inherited or in the success of the ones he has bought.

I don't think Kuyt, Crouch and Voronin are an improvement on Baros, Pongolle and Cisse not where talent or pace are concerned. In fact one wonders why he has replaced 3 very fats strikers with 3 slow as snails ones. On goal scored I'd guess they are all about equal.

We certainly won more trophies with Baros and Cisse and than we did with Kuyt and Crouch that's for sure.

So which is the better trio?

Cisse, Baros and to a much lesser extent Pongolle are frauds. They can run fast, but they have zero game intelligence, woeful touch, no understanding of the offside rule, no understanding of the word 'team', no ability to link play.............basically they were all ****e.

If pace is really all it takes for a striker to impress you, I imagine you'd be delighted if we signed Marlon Devonish and Dwain Chambers.

Cisse under Rafa is like a shotgun in Dicks Cheneys hands. An accident waiting to happen.

Baros was (and is) a headless chicken. Worst striker of the 6 mentioned.

Pongo never got a real chance. Good little player.

Kuyt, Crouch and Crow is to be prefered, no contest IMO.

        Pongolle has excellent touch.

I would say that he would be our second best striker right now after Torres.
Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

Would have liked Flo to stay, the other two I don't miss in the least.

Of the old vs new I'd always take the new.

I don't think Benitez is all that interested in 'pacey' strikers. Our build-up play is too methodical for pace to really come in to play much.

Torres is a goal scorer, skillful - a good link player. The fact he's fast is a bonus.

              Frank.
              Francis.

...."Any team that concedes as few goals as we concede is going to be tough to play against..." - Fernando Torres on Liverpool

And when I say 'play Gerrard on the left', I mean on the left

              A defensive mid for £18m?

Yes he has…like I said, “to a much lesser extent Pongo” . My barbs were aimed almost entirely at Cisse & Baros.

That said, it’s total garbage to suggest Pongolle is a better player than Crouch or Voronin IMO, although I’d probably swap him for Kuyt.

To be brutally honest we have not had a good, consistent goal scorer since Ian Rush.

Before the Fowler-brigade come out - he was only excellent for 3 full seasons, after that it was all downhill. Michael Owen was also always injured for at least 10 games a season.

On the bright side, i genuinley think that Torres will go on to be a true legend.

Got to say Shaggy was a bit harsh on Pongo. I really rated the fella, good touch, quick, real fox in the box striker and could pass it a bit as well. Certainly would prefer to have him at the club now.

As for Cisse and Milan, ok if we were playing one upfront and looking to lump it long then they were ideal for that, but I do agree with Shaggy that they both have zero ability to look up/link well or even convert a decent % of their chances.

As for our Current strikers, I do like Torres and the Crow. Kuyt is a hard worker but his touch is often poor and is slow. As for Crouch good first touch, difficult to play against, and has a very subtle touch in finishing. But lacks a nasty streak (not the worst thing in the world)

Cisse, Baros and Pongolle would get us more goals I reckon, But for the team the others are better.

                            ATM we need goals.
