Thanjk you.

I was also excited by the Ziege signing at the time, but I also remember telling everyone I could possibly talk too that Smicer would be a fantastic replacement for McManaman at the time he signed too!
I also had very high expectations for Djibs!
I won't be mentioning how I feel Kuyt's future will pan out at Anfield!
If you watch the season review of our season with Ziege - just watch the number of assists he got - you will be impressed. His deliver was never in question - he had an utterly fantastic left foot (probably one of the best we've had in a long time) The down side to Ziege was his effort and his lack of ability to play LB. He was ideally suited to the LWB role, or maybe as the left central midfield (when playing 3-5-2.)
Ziege's excellent season at Boro was when he played in that Midfield role.
Ziege and Zenden have a frighteningly similar story to their Boro and Liverpool careers when you look at it. Established internationals, that seemingly fell from the top of their game and ending up in a relative back-water of European football (known as Teeside.)
They both ended up have excellent seasons for the club - playing in a position that they weren't necessarily known for. Ziege playing LM, and LCM (in a midfield 3) and Zenden playing as an attacking CM.
It's at this juncture that Liverpool came calling; Ziege on the 'discovery' of a sell-on clause, and Zenden as he was out of contract.
Both arrive at Anfield, with good reason to be hopeful, they both been performing at Boro; but both have been played in a position different to that which they excelled at, at Boro.
However, I have to add, I believe both players are/were much more suited to play in a 3-5-2 formation, which isn't something I am keen on seeing Rafa develop.

Great post, and something I had never really considered to be honest
I'm ashamed to admit I made a bit a goon out of myself regarding:
Clough
Ince
Ziege
Le Tallec and to a lesser extent Pongo
Diouf
Cheyrou
Was always against (and aghast at!) the Ince signing, and Mark Walters signing, I still can't forgive him, just not were, ever, Liverpool signings anyway.
Maybe that's another thread, not the worst signing, but the one you wished we'd never signed for some illogical reason, Ince was/is a scummer, Walters for /that/ goal <spits>

Initially I wasn't happy about Ince, but eventually that wore off and from a football perspective I thought he was gonna be our....yep, you guessed it, final piece of the jigsaw.
Thanks very much for being ‘This Mornings’ Farmer’
I was pleased that we signed him but was suprised that we played him at LB...he had just had a very good season at Boro playing left midfield and for Germany he played LWB. If we wanted a LB we should have signed one !
