    Another one...

    ...from La Liga

Liverpool are weighing up a move for Athletic Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta, 22. (Various)

Anyone else get fed up with constantly buying foreigners? Rafa's excuse used to be the cost of English players and not having the funds, now we should have the funds and with FIFA talking more and more about introducing limits on the number of non-nationals allowed to play we could end up struggling to qualify for Europe in years to come.

I'm not saying we shouldn't go after quality like Torres, but how many defenders from spain have been successful in England.

I'm not saying spend spend spend either, but we splashed out 20 million on a striker, granted scorer goals is a bigger business, so to speak, but we have only really been average at the back so far this season.

As for someone who is available in England, Steven Taylor is currently unhappy at Newcastle and he has plenty of potential to build on what he already has.

??? this has been probably our best defensive start for a long time, we have been hit bad by aggers injury.

Lets face it we are a bigger club with more oportunities for the lad.

Anyway the main point I was making was that buying more foreigners would leave us in a difficult position if FIFA di introduce this law, especially as many of our reserve team players are now foreign too.

If the law was introduced there would be a rush for the best players, so I reckon it's best to start early.

i wouldn't worry about quotas within domestics leagues. i can't see it being approved by the eu.
anyway, if he's better value for money than an english i don't see why rafa shouldn't buy him.

Ok, that's one player. Say you're wrong and he doesn't want to leave Newcastle to come sit on our bench (which is going to be more or less the case).

Which other bright English talents should we go for?

Arbeloa would cost about £6m if he was English. The fact is you cannot pick up decent prospects for a fair amount of money in this country.

                    Exactly.

Sunderland paid MORE for DANNY HIGGINBOTHAM (£3m) than we paid for Arbeloa. The market here is a joke. I’d hate us to end up like Spurs – crammed full of mediocre, BUT ENGLISH (!!) ‘talent’.

Same happend at Leeds a few years back O'learys policy was buy all English at a premium - look where they are now!!

Its near-impossible to buy British as all the decent ones are tied up by the big clubs.

instead of quotas platini should introduce wage caps to all european leagues. plus, transfer budgets should only be a specified percentage of a club's income.
that should reduce player power and counter the inflation. at least in my simplistic world ;-)

At the end of the day a successful player has nothing to do from where they've played or come from its all down to the player. and if we were to just look in england we'd be reducing our options.

Even players bought from other English clubs arn't guaranteed to suceed. How many times have we seen a great player in a poor club turn out to be a poor player in a big club.

who'd of thought Torres would have looked liked he's played in England all his life.

As for restrictions on non nationals that's the future and why the acedemy is important but winning the league is no1 priority and to get the players we need we have to look at every option avaiable and pick the best from a teams point of view.

If we're winning the league year in year out then it will be easier if we need to prize tp english players away from other english cubs,
