Liverpool gets green light for new stadium
By ROB HARRIS
Associated Press Writer
LIVERPOOL, England (AP) — Liverpool received the go-ahead Friday to build a new stadium, clearing the way for the Reds to leave Anfield after 114 years at the storied arena.
City council leaders approved a 999-year lease on a slice of Liverpool’s Stanley Park, where the club wants to build a 60,000-capacity stadium just 300 yards (meters) from Anfield.
Liverpool has until the end of the month to convince the council it can come up with 180 million pounds (US$335 million; $265 million) for the project.
The public sector will initially contribute 26 million pounds (US$49 million; $38 million).
If the financing is approved, building work could begin early next year. The first match at the new stadium has already been penciled in for August 2009.
"It’s all systems go and all we need now if for the club to confirm the funding," council leader Warren Bradley said. "If they can, then they can start on the site next January."
An increase of 15,000 seats would put Liverpool on a par with Arsenal’s 60,000-capacity Emirates Stadium. Manchester United’s Old Trafford is the biggest stadium in English soccer with a capacity of 75,8000.
Leaving Anfield would mark the end of an era for Liverpool, which played its first match at the venue in 1892 after taking control of the land from archrival Everton, who they face Saturday in the 204th Merseyside derby.
It will also mean the end for the revered "This is Anfield" sign, which for decades has inspired Liverpool players while intimidating visiting teams before they emerge onto the pitch.
The huge roar of the crowd at Anfield has inspired Liverpool to five European Cup titles and a record 18 English league championships. Anfield took on a more somber role after 96 Liverpool fans died in a crush at Sheffield’s Hillsborough stadium in 1989, as the "Kop" became a shrine for grieving supporters.
The disaster led to a radical transformation of Anfield, with a modern all-seater stand replacing the Kop to comply with new regulations.
Liverpool City Council said the new stadium would trigger the biggest regeneration program ever seen in the area, leading to the creation of 766 permanent jobs and increasing annual tourist spending by 18 million pounds (US$34 million; $26 million). 081143 sep 06GMTAnother 96.000 reasons to honour Rafa

Yes, but it's quite irrelevant what a sponsor calls it; it'll be Anfield to the fans. Besides, we've been calling it just that for literally decades when in fact we play at Anfield Road, not AnfieldOriginally posted by Peterare you sure it'll be called 'new anfield'?
I think people should brace themselves for an 'Emirates Stadium' type sponsorship.

FYI I'd estimate Arsenal have moved about 400m at most.Originally posted by MumsafanYeah I wouldn't mind, as I say, it's not like the Arsenal deal, we'll still be in virtually the same geographical location so it'll still be called Anfield by many
Most name-changes are soon forgotten about so unless it's called the Snickers Stadium or the Starbust Bowl I reckon it'd soon become common to call it by the new name whatever it may be..
Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.
May the Lord bless this post.

It's not the same stadium as I used to watch us at in the 60s - looks completely and utterly different in every way, so the new stadium will just be another progressionOriginally posted by TinkerbitchI know it's got to happen but is no one else sad, it's been such a huge part of my life and it's going?
