          On BBC now:

Liverpool have received the go-ahead from the city council to build a new 60,000 all-seater stadium.
Council leaders approved a 999-year lease on Friday for a piece of land in the city's Stanley Park, just 300 yards away from their Anfield home.

"It's all systems go. All we need now is the club to confirm the funding," said council leader Warren Bradley.

Liverpool have until the end of September to convince the council it can come up with £180m for the project.

If financing is approved, building work could begin early next year with the first match pencilled in for August 2009.

Bradley added: "If Liverpool have the funding in place, they can start on the site from January."

The overall cost of the first phase of the project will be £215m.

It includes the new stadium which incorporates a centre with facilities for education, sport and community activities, along with a fully restored Stanley Park.

Rafa seemed very happy with the news at his pre match press conferance today saying how its a great move for the club finacially and that having more fans in the stadium will improve the atmosphere and this will rub off on the players and make them play better

                    Reds must show stadium cash

                    Sep 8 2006

                    By Nick Coligan, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL FC have just a week to prove they can afford their new stadium.

Councillors today agreed to rent out about one-third of Stanley Park so the Reds can build a 60,000-seater ground next to Anfield.

But they warned that the council has now done all it can to assist Liverpool's plans and the ball is firmly in the club's court.

Senior councillors were told the Reds' board must come up with concrete evidence that they can pay for the stadium itself by the end of next week.

That will give European and government officials enough time to decide if they will hand over £15m of taxpayers' money at a crucial meeting at the end of the month.

A package of grants will pay for the regeneration of the community around Stanley Park, without which Liverpool will not be allowed to build a stand-alone stadium.

The club have always accepted that regeneration goes hand-in-hand with the ground plans.

Cllr Flo Clucas sits on the Objective One committee which will decide whether to give a £10m handout towards the scheme.

She said: "The stadium is regarded by our European colleagues as absolutely vital. Without it, there will be no European funding.

"That has been said loudly and clearly to the club.

"If the club does not come forward with its funding, this regeneration project does not exist.

"We are waiting for them to say what they will do, because everything else is in place.

Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the North West Development Agency, added: "Any decision on our potential investment remains dependent on Liverpool securing the necessary funding to take this scheme forward.

"We need to be certain that all the money is in place and that the stadium is going ahead before we can formally approve any funding for the scheme."

Councillors today approved the regeneration side of the scheme, which includes the restoration of the rest of Stanley Park and the creation of a new Anfield Plaza on the current stadium site.

They also agreed a 999-year lease on the section of parkland needed for the new ground.

A handful of protesters demonstrated outside the town hall, claiming the scheme would see the loss of precious green space.

But the executive board was told public open space would be created at Anfield Plaza, a shop-lined concourse to the stadium from Walton Breck Road.

                              Rafa on the new stadium.....

"It is very important that we have this new stadium to have more room for our fans.

"It will help us provide very important extra funds for our future, and it will help us to compete with clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal, the latter who have just opened their new stadium.

"We have fantastic support at Liverpool and the Kop is a very special place, but our capacity is just 45,000. It would be even better for everyone if we had 60,000 fans in the ground."

Not so - we play at Anfield Road, but it has become popularly known as Anfield by convention as it is in the district of that name.

In the same way, West Ham don't play at Upton Park and QPR don't play at Loftus Road etc, but their grounds are popularly known by those names
