    No Torres against Besiktas

Fernando Torres ruled out of Champions League clash
Oct 23 2007 EXCLUSIVE by Tony Barrett, Liverpool Echo

FERNANDO TORRES was today ruled out of Liverpool’s crunch Champions League clash in Turkey.

Boss Rafa Benitez had hoped to have his top scorer available for tomorrow’s crucial tie with Besiktas in Istanbul, but following discussions with the club doctor at Melwood this morning it was decided that Torres must remain on Merseyside.

The record signing has been working his way back to fitness since picking up an abductor muscle injury with Spain 10 days ago.

But the meeting with Besiktas has come too soon.

He will now undergo further rehabilitation work at Melwood, with Sunday’s match against Arsenal a realistic target for his comeback.

But even without his top scorer, Reds boss Rafa Benitez has underlined the importance of Liverpool pushing for a win tomorrow night.

“It’s clear we need to go to Istanbul and try to win,” he declared. “If we don’t do that we know it will be difficult for us but all we are thinking about is the three points. The players know how important it is for us to win this game.

“In our first match, we know our first half performance wasn’t good, but Porto are a good side and to get a draw when we went down to 10 men wasn’t bad.

“We made a mistake in our next game against Marseille which was a bad night for us. We need to repair that mistake against Besiktas.”

Benitez is aware of the incendiary atmosphere which will be awaiting his side, but believes his squad has the strength to deal with it.

“I have spoken to Spanish journalists this week and they have told me how passionate the fans are in Besiktas. But we know that anyway and our players will be able to handle the situation.”

Xabi Alonso is back in the squad for the trip to Istanbul, but Daniel Agger and Alvaro Arbeloa will miss the match.

Just believe and you never know what will happen.

According to Benitez it's important not simply to go out to win but to go out prepared to win, which means players have to put in the same level of work on a daily basis. Anything else is unacceptable.

We should still have enough to beat Besiktas. They're an average side and although their home ground is intimidating, our lads can handle the pressure. We will beat Besiktas.

          Reina
          Finnan Carra Sami Riise
          Pennant Alonso SG Babel
          Crouch Voronin

          Momo to come on

A reasonable guess might be, assuming that Alonso is not fully fit:

              Reina
              Finnan Carra Sami Riise
              Pennant Mascherano SG Benayoun
              Crouch Kuyt

I would quite like to see a similar formation/personel to Saturday tried but with Babel in for Voronin.

Is Pennant clear to play or still suspended?

Other than that, your probably close to the mark.

                  Ah, I forgot Benni.
He will probably play instead of Babel, on the left.

Absolutely. It would be a bit of a disgrace if we don't take them apart that's why I'm sure we'll win comfortably.

Pennant red was 2 yellows so it was only a one match ban. He would play.

He's not injured, Rafa's resting/rotating him the prick, showing preference to the Premier League. Doesn't he know he has to win the Treble this year. *******

Nah. He won't win the Prem. You can quote me on that. - Sarb24

                            Thigh injury, apparently.

This is obviously a massive game. A defeat would virtually end our CL campaign whilst even a draw would leave us with it all to do.

This is were Rafa usually comes into his own, tricky away ties in the CL. I think we'll win but it'll be a tight, dogged effort against a limited but tough to beat side with passionate support behind them.

A defeat is unthinkable but should it happen Sundays game will take on even greater significance.
