Liverpool youths make Cats pay
Liverpool U18s 3
Sunderland U18s 0
Sunderland played well but paid the price for individual errors as they succumbed to a 3-0 FA Premier Academy League defeat at Liverpool yesterday, writes Neville Pilkington.
Sunderland manager Roy Keane was an interested spectator at the rearranged match, played in perfect conditions.
Kevin Ball's lads created several chances, with the best falling to Conor Hourihane, Josh Home-Jackson,
Jordan Henderson and Andrew Galer, but they were all thwarted by a superb display by the home keeper.
The Reds, for whom former Millwall striker David Amoo netted twice, with Nathan Eccleston also on target, took a first-half lead and added two more goals shortly after the break to kill the game off.
Liverpool punished to the full three misplaced passes made in vital areas and converted the gifts into goals with ruthless efficiency.
But coach Ball looked at the positives of Sunderland's performance, saying: "The game was a great advert for Academy football between two good sides.
"We played attractive football with fine movement and an excellent desire but went down to three unfortunate individual errors made by the younger team."
SUNDERLAND: Hunter, Cook, Cornforth, McArdle, Luscombe, Noble (Slegg 75), Reed, Hourihane (Liddle 70), Henderson, Galer (Waghorn 65), Home-Jackson.
