As a Liverpool supporter, it's only right that I believe my team is better than everyone else. We play better football, have a better manager, better supporters. Basically my team is the dogs bollocks!
The only bollocks here is that alot of Liverpool fans believe all of this. And this is where the problem of The Liverpool Myth begins.
We are NOT a big four team
The "Big Four" tag that has been associated with the Premier League over the past few years has merely been there to antagonise those fans of teams who aren't in it. Everton and Spurs have been said to nearly break into the big four (Everton did, but then fell out of it), and now Man City's revolution under Sven is said to be knocking on the door.
What most Liverpool supports cannot see is that we are really part of the Spurs and Everton "nearly teams". Just because the Premier League has 4 Champions League places, doesnt mean it has 4 BIG clubs. Over the past few years we have been very average. We only qulified for the 2004/2005 CL because we managed to beat a rubbish Charlton team on the last day of the season. The season before we gave Chelsea the seeds for Roman to plant and start his ownership down there.
Big teams ship out their "dead weight" players before they can become liabilities - we give Dudek more chances. Kewell still commands a weekely wage FFS!
A big club wouldnt settle for second best in the transfer market. People have bought into the lies that Rafa is buying tactically and for the team. Rubbish. If we could have signed Vidic we would have. If we could afford Alves we would have. Even when we did have lots of money to spend, we bought quantity rather than quality. Only now are we fixing this mistake with the likes of Torres and Babel.
Big clubs dont allow their away form to ruin any title ambitions by Christmas - EVERY year! This would have been sorted out, not relying on outstanding home form to keep us high in the league.
Put it straight. We have been crap for years. We dont have the right to win the league every year. We have had some decent games over the years (beating Man U for a few years was fun) and a decent cup run here and there (the 2001 "Treble", 2005 Champions League). We go to places like Birmingham City, Man City, Pompey - and get beat! We are an above average team bracketed into the same sentences as Man Utd and Arsenal.
Only in the past year would I say we had maybe broke into the billing of a big club. We have been relying solely on our history, and clinging onto the last remnents of Istanbul 2005.
The Liverpool team should NOT be built around Gerrard
Gerrard is a fantastic player. He is capable of changing games when it matters. He is captain on the team and vice captain for his country. But he is not capable of really playing a team game when it matters. Consistently over the years we have played our best football when Gerrard has either been out injured, or out on the right wing. The propensity to make every ball go through him really does not work. We have been better off with Alonso making the play, and Gerrard pushing forward attacking at will. Liverpool fans do not see this. And until they do they will not see that the team really does suffer when Gerrard doesnt play well. Its not that Liverpool is a one man team, its the fact that when he is having a bad game, we play through him and things go wrong. Alsonso is a better passer of the ball - he has more of a footballer brain, and Mascherano is better at breaking up the play. But Gerrard is far better at attacking play than both combined. So he has to play. Im not saying he should be dropped, but we really do need to allow a team to play as a team. (Look at the recent game against everton - we were MILES better once we had to play as a team, and everyone worked harder for the benefit of the team).
We arent going to win the league for a good 3-4 years yet
This is the sad yet inevitable truth. This years challenge will fall at a hurdle somewhere, and next year will be "our year". But Rafa is taking the Arsene approach and is building a solid youth structure with good technical players that will be capable of winning the league. Liverpool fans are the most unpatient in the world, everything must happen now and fast. It will come fellas, just be patient.
Liverpool supporters are the best in the world
Best in the world when at Anfield. Any other time they play up to the stereotype of whinging moaning Scousers (such as Earl and training slave). If anyone has listened to the footbal phone-ins on Radio Merseyside on a saturday and monday nights, you will have heard some utter, utter bollocks spoken by men whos voices get more and more high pitched as they speak. One defeat and Rafa must be sacked, rotation doesn't work, zonal marking is rubbish blah blah de blah. And the stories that come from away games - fighting their own fans, the stewards "self policing" the stands - just makes me wonder is it the 1970's all over again.
Rotation DOES work - but only in the right circumstances
Playing the same team week in week out will ultimately lead to tiredness and under performance. So playing different players keeps the team fresh. Rotation therefore keeps players fit and keeps them happy. Playing one team against Birmingham and then changing it for a visit to Arsenal is common sense. Two different teams with different styles of play. If you want to win this league then you have to be able to adapt. If you want to change the teams for European stlye of play, then good (playing Crouch in the CL unwise due to the refereeing ALWAYS going against him, but they will be different in the PL).
We (Liverpool supporters) need to take a step back and see the bigger picture. Too many of us have been wearing blinkers and rose tinted glasses for too long now.
This is only my opinion mind - although some of you dont know what one of them is though
