    The way to go...

The 4-2-3-1 formation is the way we should go in the future. As things stand, it's the best formation for the players we have and we should buy future signings in order to suit this.

    ..............................Pepe

    .......Finnan......Agger.........JC......Arbeloa

    ..................Alonso.............Masher

    ..Benayoun............Gerrard................Babel

    ............................Torres

Then in January, ship out Kuyt and Voronin. Sign a new striker to replace them.

And with the turmoil and uncertainty at Spurs, now is the time to SIGN AARON LENNON.

Play him in the Benayoun position, let Babel get a run of games in that formation and i think we'll see a major improvement.

We dont have good enough strikers to play 4-4-2.

Masherano's protection is needed. Alonso's ability to pull the strings is needed. Gerrard needs to do what he does best and drive through the centre.

The best solution is this formation and we're far closer to having the right personnnel for THIS formation than any other.

you wouldnt have picked that formation if Rafa hadnt

Good line up though. Got to say that looks our strongest 11 apart from Babel. I would actually play Kuyt there...depsite me knocking him the last few weeks.

Yeah man 4-2-3-1 is the future but we need the right players to play this formation and with Alonso and Torres out atm we're ****ed.
      I like it though.

...basically Mourinho's Chelski formation isn't it? I'm not sure, all depends on having the right man up top and I think Torres could do it, sadly none of our other strikers are complete enough to pull it off so without him that pretty much goes out the window.

Plus I think Rafa only played that formation because Arsenal never play with any real width in midfield

I like the formation, but it will mean we play too narrow and this will isolate the striker unless we get run ons from the backs ...

          Torres

          Babel Gerrard Villa

This would be a ****in' frightening forward line if we can get Villa in the summer !

In the mean time we could use Kuyt/Voronin/Kewell/Babel/Yossi interchanging theses positions around Torres.

yeah but that 4 2 3 1 formation on sunday was more about denying arsenals fullbacks getting into the game than it was about us. bottom line is you can any formation you want but when we have a back four that constantly hoofed the ball as they did on sunday your always gonna be talking out of your arse about we can do this or we can do that.

We did play a bit on Sunday mate. Some of our football was excellent (notably Gerrard's chance right at the end - it was a fantastic bit of attacking play). It's just that we put so much effort pressing Arsenal that we couldn't sustain our passing game. That's my ten cents anyway.

Regardless of what formation we use we desperately lack width IMO and its that along with, (Torres aside), a weak strike force, poor ball retention and a tendency to hoof that continues to scupper us.

Thats basically Man U's current formation. It just seems to have clicked for them all of a sudden.

I disagree with Lennon. His delivery into the box is no way as good as Pennant's talk less Gerrard's.

I don't think it's fair to say it's United's formation or Mourinho's. I think Ferguson is copying the Milan formation and Mourinho played with one holding midfielder and the Lampard and another plus two wide players.

Rafa played this formation at Valencia I think and I'm pretty sure he has tried it out before for Liverpool. At Valencia the players suited well for the formation, Mista up top, Albelda and Baraja in midfield and Vicente and Rufete on the wings, although I forget who was in the hole as I think Aimar only played sporadically there.
                            * The above is posted in my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

i don't think it's the best formation with the players we have. it's a good formation but it does depend on the oponent imho. last season we played a bit of 3-5-2 now and again which was a good formation for us as well.

anyone who wants to get rid of voronin is just mad! the lad didn't cost us a penny and is a great asset to the team. can he play on the wing? no he can't but he's a striker or second striker.
