Swedish starlet Astrit Ajdarevic scored another cracker from outside the box, but Hughie McAuley's u18 side were held at home by Everton despite battering the blues for most of this game. Marvin Pourie hit the post and also had an effort cleared off the line, Ben Parsonage was also denied by the woodwork and Nathan Eccleston saw a goalbound effort headed off the line by a defender as Liverpool completely dominated at the Academy this morning.

The blues equalised from a free-kick completely against the run of play, but even after Liverpool midfielder Sean Highdale was dismissed for a second yellow card late on it was McAuley's men who continued to set the pace. Pourie and Eccleston both had chances to win it towards the end, but somehow Everton escaped with a point.

He's 14-year-old John Cofie, who is a member of our Centre of Excellence, and is a young player who is clearly very highly rated by the club.

Steve Cotterill, in response to the speculation, has said today: "There are a lot of clubs looking at John, but unfortunately for them he is our player. He's registered and on forms with us, so nobody can nick him, and that's really where it stands.

"There's a lot of speculation that we didn't really want, but scouts and agents all talk and we're just very lucky that we have a good 14-year-old with us.

"He's a special talent for his age, which is why everybody wants him. He's a big strong lad who scores goals, but we want him to be a bit older and be a special talent with, and for us, so anyone playing games with John at the moment is not doing him any favours.

"To be honest, I'm actually quite chuffed about it. I never had anyone phoning about anybody when I first came here, and now we've got some really good young players that everybody wants. We're quite flattered by that at Burnley really."

Big Vince Overson, the head of youth development at Turf Moor added: "We can never stop speculation about young players in the tabloids. However, we must be doing something right at this club and we just want to keep producing players that can go into our first team.

"In the last few years we have done that and we will continue to concentrate on looking after and nurturing our young players."

Think that interview with Cotterill is a couple of months old.

I've met Steve Cotterill quite a few times, he use to go to my school and when he was manager of Cheltenham he use to come in and give free tickets to our P.E class. He is also good mates with Jamie Redknapp and use to help him train when he was injured.

                Just thought i'd mention that

                    U18S DRAW WITH EVERTON

Paul Hassall at the Academy 03 November 2007

A magnificent strike from Astrit Ajdarevic was not enough to secure victory as Liverpool Under-18s were held to a 1-1 draw in the 'mini derby' at the Academy.

The Swedish midfielder broke the deadlock with a 25-yard drive on 60 minutes but the Reds could not hold the lead and five minutes later Blues defender Jack Rodwell rose highest to head home and earn a share of the spoils for the visitors.

Coach Hughie McAuley was pleased with his side's endeavour but felt they could and should have claimed maximum points.

"I thought we certainly had enough chances to win the game," he told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"We had the clear-cut opportunities and their keeper made a couple of good saves. We hit the bar and hit the post and on another day they go in - but today they didn't.

"It was a typical derby game, with a little bit of tension because of what's at stake and there wasn't the free-flowing football we usually play, particularly in the first-half.

"But we did much better in the second and we can now look forward to Bolton at home next Saturday and hopefully we can create a similar amount of chances then."

In a largely forgettable first-half Marvin Pourie had the most notable opportunity when his snap shot on 43 minutes crashed off the left-hand post with Blues keeper Stubhaugh well beaten.

But it was an entirely different story throughout the second period when the game sparked into life with a series of good chances for Liverpool.

Ben Parsonage saw his goal-bound effort clip the top of the crossbar before Nathan Eccleston was denied by a last-ditch challenge following a sublime through ball by Sean Highdale.

The Everton goal was living a charmed life and on 56 minutes they survived a goalmouth scramble when Pourie's drilled cross was well saved with Eccleston's follow up somehow headed off the line.

It was only a matter of time until the hosts grabbed the lead and on the hour they did so courtesy of Ajdarevic's thunderbolt.

The youngster picked the ball up 25-yards from goal following a crunching challenge by Shane O'Connor, and let fly with a sizzling effort that flew into the bottom right-hand corner of the net.

It was a deserved advantage for the Reds but one that would only last a matter of minutes.

Sean Highdale was booked for a late tackle on the left and from the resultant free-kick the Blues equalised courtesy of a towering header from Rodwell.

It was a bitter blow for the home side, and although Highdale was sent-off for his second bookable offence late on, they had chances to snatch victory with Pourie and Eccleston both going close.

Liverpool team: Hansen, Awang, O'Connor, Irwin, Kennedy (McGiveron), Highdale, Amoo, Ajdarevic, Pourie, Eccleston, Parsonage (Collins)
