He's saying we didn't set out to sit back. You seem to take that as a fact where as we don't. You need to revise your opinion on the fact that it was a matter of performance rather than an objective.Originally posted by DJS View PostWhat are you arguing with tomas...
That defensive tactics DONT invite pressure?

But we did soak up everything they threw at us, apart from that long ball and flick that set up Bentley for his shot. The Dunn shot, as has been pointed out, is not something you can put down to bad defending or tactics imo.
I am pretty sure you knew what I meant with my initial post though.--== Because the gang and the government is no different ==--

nope, bad technical defending creates "pressure"Originally posted by DJS View PostNo i dont.
But defensive 'sit back' tactics invite pressure.
defensive tactics thermselves provide security and facilitate effective defence at the cost of less posession/territory. If the players are executing the tactics right theres no pressure at all.
I'll give you an example which youre unquestionably too young to remember:
spring 1987 if my memory doesnt fail me, league cup semi final 1st leg away to southampton (this is one of kenny dalglish's sides so thinK attractive football! and the saints are a tough tough side with the exceptional peter shilton between the posts) midweek, ive skived 2 days off school pretending to be ill (6th form) to go down and stay with relies on the south coast and see the game. paul walsh slaps one of the saints players, early on and gets red carded. For the next 70 minutes, lfc play "defensive tactics". they play it really well. the saints have shed loads of the ball but make no (literally zero) attempts on goal. there is no "pressure" i have a long trip back but even then, at 17, i watched the game in an analytical way much of the time so i enjoyed what id seen: a really good side, using defensive tactics when defensive tactics were what was called for, and on this occasion getting a draw. as i recall we spanked them 3-0 in the second leg then lost at wembley in the final - the first time we ever lost a game ian rush scored in.
thats just one game that sticks in my mind, but the point is ALL the best sides use defensive tactics effectively. the tactics at blackburn were spot on. if the players had done their bit - kuyt kept his head or stevie G run to the back post instead of the near, then wed have won this game 1-0 and the whole media would be applauding the wily fox rafa for his tactical mastery.
every championship winning lfc side i saw - except maybe 1989/90 when hansen was on his last legs, had a "lockdown" defensive mode - where they actually took on a formation exactly like the 4-5-1 we used on saturday. king kenny himself was not above working hard as a fifth midfielder and rush worked his arse of to pressurise the oppositions central defenders. Its critical we develop the ability to play that way for the current side
theres a lot more to tactics than demanding 4-4-2 or "attack attack attack" but at the end of the day, the importance of tactics is very small next to the execution of the basic footy techniques.Last edited by enema of the state; 05-11-07, 11:15 PM.drunk knows best

mate - football manager was a 48K spectrum game when that game was played and if the truth be known, it was as much fun back then as anything you get on an x-box 360 now. it was followed by a game called emlyn hughes soccer an that game's playability has never really been significantly improved right up to pro-evo 2008 (except the fact you could score from throw insOriginally posted by SpeedyG View PostI have the ultimate proof that you are right.
