So after a days reflection and putting things into perspective, it's obvious we've not started the season as we'd have liked. But thinking about it there've been so many unavoidable things that have been hindering our season so far:
- We've got 5 or so new players who will need time to settle
- We've had injuries to our defense in Finnan, Carra and Riise, which might go
some way to explaining the bad run of defending we've had
- We've had two international breaks and we've only played 3 prem games!!
- We've got some badly out of form players Alonso and Garcia spring to mind
instantly
- We've just come off a world cup and some players like Stevie G haven't had a
chance to recharge the batteries.
- And we had to play 2 champs league qualifiers to play
Now i'm not saying that it's any excuse or that we've got it harder than any other side has had it. But those points might go some way to explaining why we have got off to a poor start. Lets not forget both Chelsea and Arsenal haven't started as they'd like neither have Spurs, and along with us thats 4 out of most peoples top 5 for the end of the season. So it's not like we're out on our own.
But hopefully now most of that is behind us, no internationals for a while, only Riise and Kewell out injured, Warnock should be back any time now to give some cover at LB to let Aurelio go to back to doing what he was bought for. And hopefully the Champs league game might give the players a bit of a chance to get things together and play some good football, which we didn't do yesterday, without the pressures of the league.
We could turn this whole sittuation round by next Sunday, wins against PSV and Chelsea will go a long way to turning our season round, and restoring supporters faith in the side. At the end of the day if Everton were going to be one of our direct rivals I'd maybe have been a bit more bothered by the result, but a game against Chelsea is a real 6 pointer and if I was given the choice of winning one or the other I'd have go for Chelsea as it may be more important if we hold ambitions of winning the league this season.
