    Worst appointment ever....

    must be old Joe Corrigan.

I remember a pre season friendly a few years ago in Koln, big Joe brought out Kirkland and The Dude for a long warm up before the match. After some stretching and a few sprints, the dude went between the sticks for some stopping practice.

Big Joe gathered 5 or 6 balls together, ready to pebbledash Jetzy's goal with laser guided rockets and promply hoofed the first 3 straight over the bar into the Liverpool end.

    Very Riisesque.

Big Joe managed to singlehandedly **** up every decent goalie that arrived at the club during his tenure.

    500 and still not out.

It is strange how people like David James, Dudek, Kirkland, and even Friedel (who is one of the most consistent keepers in the league) all looked so unsure in goal for us. And the only common denominator appears to be Corrigan.

Wasn't he a highly regarded keeper in his day?

I couldn't stand Corrigan and blamed him, possibly unfairly, for ruining the Liverpool careers of James and Friedel.

I always thought Corrigan whipped in a mean cross when conducting the pre-match training with the keepers. Might have been an idea to have a couple of people challenging the keeper though when he went up to catch it as catching the ball unchallenged isn't really the same. Would have certainly helped James.

He was an OK keeper during his playing days but there were a lot better. Paul Cooper , Phil Parkes , Peter Shilton and Ray Clemence were all well ahead of him in terms of playing for his country

He did once catch a bottle of milk from the Kop - unfotunately it was on his head!

Suppose you have a physicist and a sociologist standing at the side of a field, observing a set of events unfolding on the field. The physicist does [describes] it using the terminology of mass and velocity and frequency of radiation and the rest. And the sociologist does it by describing it as a rugby match.

                          In hindsight, you're absolutely right.

Really? I thought it was universally known that Paul Cooper is a tw*t.

Oh, hang on, you mean that one...

I vaguely recall a goalie called Cooper, possibly at Leeds, but I'm convinced he never played for England - I could be wrong.

But your way off beam in saying that he and Phil Parkes were well ahead of Corrigan in terms of playing for their country. Parkes made just one appearance for England in his entire career, whilst Corrigan played 9 times, conceding just 5 goals. Shilton and Clemence obviously dominated the same era, but Corrigan was considered next best.
