    A very interesting read.

    From liverpoolfc.tv

Ryan Babel is enjoying life at Anfield but insists there is still a lot more to come from him in a red shirt.
The former Ajax ace scored two goals in the 8-0 mauling of Besiktas in midweek, including one sublime finish which showed the quality he undoubtedly possesses.

Ideally he wants to play up front but Babel is no stranger to hard work and the Reds number 19 will play anywhere the manager asks him to.

"I see myself as a striker long term," said Babel. "I started as a striker at Ajax at 11 and I live the chance to score goals and give assists. The boss told me he signed me as a winger, but he knows that I prefer to be a striker.

"It was good to score in midweek and it showed what I can do. I have confidence enough to say that if I work hard, I can be a better player than I am now.

"There was a time at Ajax when there was a lot of criticism of me, about my technique and my skills. People said I was not good enough to play in the first team and the crowd picked up on it and started looking at me more closely.

"When I lost the ball, for example, you would hear the crowd groan, so at that time I had a big call to make and decided to show them it was not true."

Such was his commitment and determination to succeed, the Dutch international hired a personal technique trainer, Chris Kronshorst, formerly of Porto, to help him improve his game.

"I wasn't playing well, the club weren't performing well and we were all under pressure all the time," added Babel.

"I thought I have to work on myself to make the team and myself successful again.

"I used to train a lot in private looking at a lot of things, like how to use your body in certain situations, and I got a lot of confidence from that. It helped me on the pitch and I'm still using the things that I learnt in those sessions now.

"Somehow what I was doing became public and Ajax found out and said I couldn't do it any more, but it definitely helped me."

I saw an interview with him after the CL 8-0 and he wasn't complimentary about the rotation either.

Him getting a coach for him self. And Ajax them telling him not to do that.

        All sounds interesting to me.

Something along the lines that he used to play week in week out at Ajax, but now he was having to get used to playing a lot less. He didn't look happy when he said it.

That said, he rarely looks happy. He doesn't seem very demonstrative. He doesn't strike me as the sort of player who would bleed red, if you know what I mean.

He definitely looks like a striker in the making to me. I had never seen him play before he joined us and I was hoping he could be the player to tear up the wings for us a la Barnes but it is clear he is not a winger in the traditional sense. With his pace he is a great option up front in the absence of Torres and clearly the lad has a lot potential.

He's also extremely young and shouldn't be expecting to play every game at a top team at his age so I can't understand why he'd have probs with rotation already.

A table leg or lampshade, lets buy a striker and play him in midfield (Kuyt) and another striker and play him as a winger.

He has played really well considering but is still very raw. If he rotates with Harry and I believe is good for 90 minutes a week at best this will allow Babel to get good game time without being over exposed. I would hope Harry is mentoring him cos Ryan could have no better IMO.
Nah. He won't win the Prem. You can quote me on that. - Sarb24

he is a piss poor winger but could be tasty striker in the making

Henry started as a not very good winger at arsenal............

I think he is going to be very good, probably not as good as Henry (he a special one off) but very good none the less.

I agree with the sentiment on this thread. Not very good winger, but an excellent striker in the making.

Don't read too much into his rotation comment. He just answered honestly. What player doesn't want to play week in week out? and when English isn't your first language I would imagine it is a lot harder to give politician's response. He didn't say it in a 'throw your toys out the pram' manner, just a matter of fact way. He was told he would be rotated when he joined so he knew that. Also, he could have signed for Arsenal but he chose Liverpool, so he isn't that mercenary.

he's a crap winger, as expressed earlier lampshade and table leg spring to mind. i hope he makes it as a striker but tuesday night was very much one way traffic by the time babel came on
