    Carragher’s Distribution

I remember Alan Hansen once said about defending, if in doubt LAUNCH IT!

It’s something we didn’t do in the mid-nineties and to be honest, was something of an issue.

Under the Frenchman, such a policy was encouraged, and it worked. Simply because it suited our basic style of play.

Under Rafa, we play a much more sophisticated game which is based around ball retention and paced build-up.

Hyypia, was the most obvious example of the Frenchman’s Hoofing. Time and time again you’d see 50-60 yard punts in preference to a 10yard pass to a central player. Now I’ve got nothing to base this on, but I’m pretty sure that Rafa had a word in Sammy’s ear. “Short simple passes, let the midfield do their job, no long balls unless you are 100% certain of the pass, no”

I can see this in his game, his distribution is much better these days, once or twice he will go to hoof it, stop, blink, and play a 10 yard pass. There a good boy. To be fair, he also occasionally plays a blinder of a long ball, and he has been allowed that!

Carragher suffered the same affliction. Unfortunately we haven’t seen such improvement in him. Time and time again, when under a little pressure, we get aimless punts either straight up in the air or high into the centre circle.

Sure it is great to have a no risk policy, but we are talking about the NEXT level of football here. Agger is an excellent exponent of careful distribution and to be honest Jamie is capable of it as well, he has after all played as a holding midfielder on several occasions to great effect, for club and country.

    Sort it out lad!

Sami is great at long passes. I've said it since the 1st season I watched him for us. Yeah he can hoof it sometimes but boygeorge he can hit a peach of a pass sometimes.

His striking of the ball is excellent for a defender aswell. From the few times I've seen him strike from outside the box, usually on the volley, he has always hit the target
Contrary to popular belief, I have huge genitals.

Sami is a good passer of the ball but any player will hoof it up if there isn't a player available to pass to.

Yes, but you have admit that he does have the tendancy to hoof it more often than he needs to.

I know I could be killed for saying this but I would not be surprized if we where a better team after Carra is replaced.

Not killing you....but against Barca or Chelsea or Scum or any big team, would you have Kompany in your team or Carra.

Carra's all round game has not been up to his usual standards this season. He better shape up though because Rafa is ruthless.

I think its always been Carras weak point, even when he was at FB. Brilliant at defending, but passing wise he is very neandrathal at best. One thing to clear the decks with a hoof, but it is another to play a pinpoint pass to set an attack up. But I think he and Agger do complement each other and work well.

You're wrong imo. For a man mountain of a CB, he's a very good passer.

With the execption of this season and last, Sami has been the best defender at the club since he arrived.

Carra would tear his heart out for LFC.

Performances against Chelsea and not least in Istanbul show that.

Agree with you mate. Decent passer is our Sami.

Also, no need to refer to Houllier as "the Frenchman" in the original post. St. John was stupid to do it. I know Houllier isn't exactly flavour of the month with us, but come on Michael mate, it's not very nice

I'm not sure he is as bad as people make out. He certainly lacks confidence in his own passing though which leads him to be hesitant especially early in the season. His mid range passing is very poor but normally after a number of game each season under Rafa his short passing to the holding player etc. is very reliable.

For me the main problem is that he hesitates and is inaccurate with the sort of quick mid range passes that start counter attacks. I'm not sure how much this can be improved but I think the ideal model for him in that regard would be Tony Adams who came on phenomenally in that area late in his career when Wenger was coaching him.
