I'm not disputing the fitness issue.

But you can rotate for fitness when you have home games against Wigan, Sunderland, Derby, Boro etc...not away at Pompey.

If a player hasnt recovered from a knock/injury, you cant say to that injury go away now come back after the game and then heal for one week.

Yes but while having them on the bench, Rafa was hoping he didnt have to use them at all. Its called taking a risk!!!!. Just like Torres was on the bench vs Besiktas and vs Fulham. If we were winning vs Fulham, Torres wouldnt have come on for the last 20 mins.

It only takes one injury for an 'unfit' sub to be needed.

And Rafa isnt a risk taker.

Yes but the point is that over a season the quality of the player is almost certainly a function of talent, fitness and form. Rotation may potentially help to maximise the later two thus meaning that for a given group of players with a given maximum ability over a season rotating might be better.

United as it has been shown many times make numerically a similar number of rotations over a season, although I am yet to see a distribution of them. Therefore it is a reasonable assumption that the difference in the two teams overall results is either a function of overall player ability or the types of rotation. Due to not being things which have an easy metric representation we cannot disentangle the two factors.

Note that both points of view assume that better teams will over a period of time win more games. You simply refuse to listen to any arguments because you have already made up your mind.

I think there is a further factor that Rafa has alluded to which helps him decide who is the most APPROPRIATE player for any particular game. You'll notice for each position he has two different types of players.

For example Yossi plays as an inside right, cutting in all the time. Pennant on the other hand is an outside right, hugs the wing and tends to cross vs playing through balls a la Yossi.

This same pattern is repeated across the whole squad.

I'm sure that when Rafa does his oppostion analysis, he determines which style of play is most likely to succeed.

Just re-inforces what you say Dave, peoples perception of rotation on here is grossly oversimplified and hence thier conclusions are likely to be dubious at the very least.

And Rafa has mitigated that risk by buying players who are comfortable in multilpe roles. TBH Pepe and Hyypia aside I can't think of a single player that can only play one position.
