Steven Gerrard: Missing Euro 2008 'will kill me'

            Nov 15 2007

By John Curtis, Liverpool Daily Post

Steven Gerrard in action for England

STAND-IN skipper Steven Gerrard has admitted it “will kill him” to watch next summer’s Euro 2008 finals if England fail to qualify.

Steve McClaren’s side find their destiny is out of their hands and they have to rely on Russia failing to beat Israel or Croatia losing to Macedonia this weekend to give them a lifeline.

Only then will England’s final qualifier against Croatia at Wembley next Wednesday have any major significance and the likelihood is that McClaren and his players will face a massive backlash from fans.

Gerrard still has faith in the squad he insists is the best he has been involved with at international level but that belief could be shattered after he has watched the Russians’ clash in Tel Aviv.

The Liverpool star said: “I said this is the best squad I’ve been involved with and I still believe that.

“If we’re not to get to the finals it will be hard knowing we would have been possibly one of the best teams in the tournament with a great chance of winning it.

“It will kill me watching but, if you look at this qualifying campaign so far, we haven’t been consistent enough. If we had been, we wouldn’t now be in this situation.

“Maybe there was a slight hangover after the World Cup when it was a massive disappointment to go out of the tournament when we did, especially on penalties again.

“Maybe it took a bit of time for us to get over that – but as a player you don’t want to look for excuses.”

Gerrard admits it will be a tense affair keeping tabs on the bid by Israel to frustrate Guus Hiddink’s side.

He said: “I’ve watched a few nerve-wracking games involving Liverpool when I’ve been injured or suspended and I’ve watched a few in the World Cup as well. When you can’t do anything about it, it’s not good viewing. I’m sure when the Russians go near the Israel goal I’ll be chomping on my nails and I’ll have none left at the end of the game.

“But we’re in this situation and we have to get on with it. I’m trying to keep all my focus on Friday’s game in Austria at the moment.”

Gerrard reiterated his faith in the under-fire McClaren and the futility of constantly changing managers.

He said: “To be an international boss, I think you have to be a top manager first and foremost. It’s important you do the right coaching and the right tactics and the players believe in you. As a player I do believe in him (McClaren).

“I feel as if he’s done the right things since he took over. The criticism he has had is slightly unfair because at the end of the day it’s us as players who have gone out there and not achieved the results we should have done.

“Small details decide games and, when individuals make mistakes or miss chances, it’s not the manager who misses them, it’s the players.

“Unfortunately in this game, it’s always the manager who takes it in the neck if things go wrong. It happens all over football at every level.

“You get judged on results and the manager gets the blame at the end of the day which I feel is unfair. It’s important that you are not changing managers every six months or every year.

“As a player you want to get used to a manager and sometimes it does take time. I feel as though Steve McClaren has got this team moving in the right direction even though there is a big chance that we might not be in next summer’s finals.”

I think even the most hardened anti-English folk would agree that the current England squad is one of the strongest for a very long time (even if they don't perform like it) and this is during a period where many of the top teams in the country play very few English players so the arguement doesn't seem to stand. I would concentrate more on the fact that English players are priced out of the market and their lack of flexibility in regards to moving abroad means they will always suffer. Berbatov cost more than £5m less than Bent.
I agree he was very naive.

We are owned by 2 yanks, managed by a Spanish bloke and have more foreign players than English players yet he would be happy for the FA to turn round and say 'sorry boys but you've got to sell Torres, Alonso, Reina, Agger, Arbeloa, Babel. Yossi and Lucas because England are **** and we can't qualify for a major championship'.

Fed up of this bull**** debate that, surprise surprise, only pops up when either Arsenal with all their foreigners are doing well (thanks to Fergiescum) or when England are doing ****e. England's **** national team has nothing to do with the influx of foreign players - if the English players were good enough they would get into their club sides and there wouldn't be foreigners ahead of them. Really can't see the Premier League wanting to dilute the quality and standard of their product so as to benefit the England notional side.

This Little-Englander mentality is seriously pissing me off now. I was listening to Talksport briefly last night and that clown Gary Stevens was suggesting that the UK shouldn't even be in the EU and be dictated on it's law making etc **** off and go back to the 30s you moron.
