I often wonder how much pressure the "10 games from greatness" quote put on the players at the time

By all accounts, we should have beaten Leverkusen - Hamann's substitution killed us. We eventually finished 2nd in the league - but I think it was all done and dusted with a few games to go. I can't help thinking that that quote adversely affected the team.

Indeed. The "10 games from greatness" was ill-timed, ill-judged and served no real purpose.

Still get a jolt of pain every time I see a photo of Maldini with that trophy.

I avoided any footage of Milan lifting it and all the newspaper pictures. Completely gutted.



Then watching Besiktas game it flashes up in the opening credits

yep, still extremely painful. I've tried to erase it from my memory as much as possible. I don't even acknowledge that it ever happened. For me the CL last season ended on 1 May at Anfield.

I have never watched anything from that match since I was there.
I am not sure I ever will either.

I think that feeling of not accepting failure, the "first is first, second is nowhere" attitude is what makes us the club we are and sets us apart from the rest. When I think back to some of David Dein's comments about how Arsenal had arrived as a major European Club just by beating Villareal in the CL semi to get to the final, and how delighted some Arsenal fans were just to get to the final (they were tooting their horns in the streets and had a mini-parade in the streets where I live on the night they beat Villareal ), I'm just glad we don't accept second best.
