    Liverpool v Newcastle Prem Classics

Fox over here showed a 30 min highlight of this game and here are some of my observations.

1.) What happened to the Anfield pitch? It was a mess.
2.) Keegan's suit and tie was horrible.
3.) Collymore looked great what happened to him?
4.) Young Robbie Folwer....wow wow wow wow
5.) Digger was slow but the vision...pass to setup the winner where him and Rushie almost fall over each other
6.) Razor was a bit overweight
7.) Too bad Rob Jones had injury problems
8.) Everytime McAteer had the ball all I could think about was 'Trigger'

I lived in the US at that time and there football coverage was non-exsistent. So from about 90-96 I really did have a chance to follow Liverpool.

Keegan with his head down in his arms after the winner was great.

I missed it as I was due in hospital that day and my operation was cancelled so I went home and watched it on Sky.

I was gutted to miss that game.
Twin boys - now arriving late August 2008.

Its gonna be Fernando and Gerrard if I get my way!

                  Certainly is

After that night at Anfield for the first 4-3 I thought it would never be beaten, 2 great attacking teams going for it, the game swinging this way and that.
Strikers like Ferdinand and Fowler at their peak.
Inividual flair from players like McManaman and Ginola.
                  Legends like Rush and Barnes.
The crowd was ****ing incredible those days.

                  Istanbul topped it though

This is so true. If our defending had matched our attacking under Uncle Roy we'd have been champions.

8PM: RELIVE ANFIELD'S BEST EVER GAME
                          Paul Eaton 17 November 2007

Once the excitement from all of today's international football has died down, make sure you tune in to LFC TV from 8pm for a look back on one of Anfield's greatest ever games.
Former Red Jason McAteer will be in the LFC TV studios to reflect on the Reds' 'Class of 1995-96' - a season which included the never to be forgotten 4-3 victory over Newcastle at Anfield when Stan Collymore grabbed a dramatic winner at the Kop end.

It was a season which began with so many expectations but which ultimately ended in heartbreak with defeat to Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

But it was a campaign which will always be remembered for the thriller against the Geordies at Anfield - and you can relive all 90 minutes of that incredible game this evening.

During the programme McAteer will reflect on his memories of that match and also give a revealing insight into the stars who made up the club's 'Class of 1995-96'.

                            not really

the 5-3-2 formation was a very effective defence in itself. we didnt do too bad in 1995/6 - in fact as i recall we had a better defensive record than the scum who ran out champions.

                            the problems were mainly
                            A) that we were too easy to stifle by deep lying defences (sound familiar?)
B)we were too reliant on mcmamnaman and he was someone who always let us down at the key moments/key games
                            C) we had an error prone keeper
                            D) roy evans wasnt all that good a manager and let personal favouritisms unbalance the team unit - examples being the use of rob jones (imo the best english right back in the last 2 decades and who made gary neville look like a pub player) at left back! or the selection of a central midfield pairing of barnes and redknapp at the expense of michael thomas

its a fallacy that we played some gloriously attractive football but were held back by a leaky defence. we were just short of a title-winning level in all departments

1.) Pitches were often crap back then, pitch technology has moved on a lot
2.) Agreed. Most club suits and ties look bad.
3.) He was great, unfortunately he was a borderline fruitloop. He could have been the very best if his head was right though, he had it all. Pace, power, finishing, control, composure. He was unstoppable for three seasons - two at Forest and his first at Liverpool. If you genuinely don't know what happened to him then check Wikipedia. He played for a succession of clubs before retiring young, beating up Ulrika Johnson in a bar in Paris and then getting caught "dogging" at various wooded areas in the Midlands.
4.) Definitely - an absolute joy to watch
5.) Yeah, he could hardly move by then but he never gave the ball away. When him and Thomas played alongside each other we were useless that season though as neither could run and both relied on MacManaman too much
6.) Just like the pope is a bit catholic, and Graham Norton is a bit fruity.
7.) The first of our cursed right-backs. To think, Gary Neville couldn't get a cap at first until Rob Jones got injured. How different things could have turned out...
8.) Have you heard the story that Ruddock tells about going round "Trigger's" house? Macateer accidentally locked his keys in his Porche, and him and Ruddock set the alarm off trying to find a way in. The police arrived after hearing the alarm, agreed to use their expertise to help, and sent MacAteer into the house to fetch a coat hanger for them to use to break in and get the keys. 2 mins later MacAteer emerges from the house with a wooden one
