mmm - very very strange - hopefully it was a load of bollocks - he prob couldn't be arsed with the press conference and was probably getting hounded with questions to do with englands performance and just decided to mumble a few words and say whatever he could to get them of his back.

Surely thats just him writing up what you felt but having to make more of a story out of it though.

It is a little concerning but until we se if it has any long term implications I'm not going to over react.

In the sense that he just seemed to get bored/pissed off with the questions or was the joke forced (apologies I have no audio to check out any of the clips myself)?

I think the questions pissed him off as much as anything else but it was a bit strange how he kept replying "I am focused on training and coaching my team".

from the offal (obv a bit more positive spin)

Rafael Benitez has backed Steven Gerrard and Peter Crouch to bounce back from their England disappointment when Liverpool travel to Newcastle United on Saturday.
The Liverpool captain was one of a number of players who have come in for criticism following England's failure to qualify for Euro 2008, and while the Reds boss would not be drawn into the debate over the national team he did give his support for his skipper.

"I am only focused on my team and I will always give my 100 per cent support to Steven," commented Benitez. "His commitment is 100 per cent always and he will play as well as he always does for us.

"Crouch scored a great goal and he showed the quality he has. We are now looking forward to the Newcastle match.

"It will be a tough game as every one is in the Premier League, but we know if we can win we will be really close to the top of the table.

"It is a really important week coming up for us and I am fully focused on coaching and training my team."
i reckon the press have come him hounded him about gerrard/crouch/england etc he got bored pissed off with the questions, he could have been having a bad day anyway and couldn't be arsed with a press conference let alone one that went on about england so he just fed them answers so he just get out of there. Then the press jump all over it to turn another screw in the hicks/gillet/benitez split that is probably all bollocks

I've listened to the interview now and my impression is that he was just annoyed with the questions about England. Obviously it looks like he didn't have a good week at the office, but that doesn't mean he wants out, far from it.

                            Calm down.

If he was going to leave though, what possible attraction would the England job have? It's a manager's graveyard / media circus / bizarre medieval freakshow all rolled in to one.
Be just as well to paint a target on his back and stand outside an American high school waving a 'Marilyn Manson is a tit' placard.
