Liverpool fans to march in support for Rafa Benitez

Nov 27 2007 by Ben Rossington, Liverpool Echo

A LIVERPOOL fan group today called for supporters to march on Anfield in support of Rafael Benitez.

Reclaim the Kop has organised a protest outside a nearby pub and wants fans to bring banners and flags to take to the ground.

Other supporters’ organisations also called for demonstrations of support at tomorrow night’s Champions League game against Porto.

An online petition backing Benitez was today nearing 5,000 signatures.

John Mackin from RTK said: “Liverpool Football Club exists not to make money. It exists to win trophies and be a source of pride for it's supporters. It serves no other purpose.

“We are calling on all supporters of Liverpool FC to demonstrate their unconditional support of Rafael Benitez this Wednesday.

“Rafa is far and away the most important figure at Anfield – bar none.

“Under his guidance the club has appeared in two European Cup finals in the little over three years that he has been manager.

“We currently stand well-placed in the title race and remain undefeated.”

The RTK protest will start at 6.30pm tomorrow outside the Sandon pub on Oakfield Road, close to The Kop.

Les Lawson, official Liverpool Supporters’ Club secretary, said: “The vast majority of fans are appalled at the thought of axing Rafa.

“It would be a massive mistake and a massive backward step for the club. Hicks and Gillett don’t know what they’re taking on if they take on Liverpool supporters.

“We will be making our feelings known in no uncertain terms on Wednesday night with banners and flags.

“We just hope common sense prevails and the owners give Rafa their backing.”

Richie Pedder, chairman of the Liverpool FC Supporters’ club, said: “Rafa could be one of the best managers we’ve ever had. He just needs to be given that opportunity.

“There is a mixture of anger and disbelief among fans over how things have turned out. It’s just got to be sorted out one way or the other.

“He’s got the support of the vast majority of fans.”

The online petition, organised by the This is Anfield website, is addressed directly to Hicks and Gillett.

It calls on the American owners to recognise the importance of Benitez to the club.

Will EST be there as a group, if so where are you all meeting?

You need to ease up on the coffee mate

Seriously though, why are you attacking the owners? There is absolutely no proof that they have lied about anything or that 'they've ****ed us over' for that matter.

IMO the protest is about showing support for Rafa and letting everyone know how important he is to us, it's not about slagging off our new owners. Well it isn't for me anyway.
